Track team does well in Worland

The Bobcat boys and girls track team had a great showing last Saturday at the Wind River Invitational in Worland.

According to head coach Ernie Mecca, they got a few more automatic qualifiers for the State meet along with more personal records in spite of cold, windy conditions.

With so many personal records being broken this early in the season, the question is whether those who attended state last year and perhaps ranked lower will continue to climb and hit the winner’s podium this year.

“Our goal is personal records,” Mecca said, “but you never know what the other teams are going to do, who they’ll have out for the year.

“We hope they’ll move up and hope by state they peak.”

Mecca said there are two things the Bobcats and every other team faces this time of year; absences because of spring break and injuries.

“There are athletes that are out of town because of spring break and there are a lot of other activities that go on during this time of year, like music events, prom, that sort of thing. All the teams face it, it’s not just us.”

He added that the students that are still in town are coming to practice during spring break, but they’ll be taking a limited squad to Powell on Saturday for the L.A.K. Invite.

“We seem to have a few more injuries this year than we’ve had in the past,” he said. “We’re just not healthy right now, but we’ve got time.

“By the end of April we get past all this stuff and have a good five weeks before state.”
