  • Dinner with a friend

    Feb 12, 2026

by Jill Pertler I had dinner with a dear friend the other night and near the start of the meal, something became apparent: we had differing political views on numerous topics. Can you imagine, sharing a Cobb salad and a Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich over dinner with someone who sits on the other side of the aisle as you? Crazy, I know. But just wait, I haven’t even gotten to the really preposterous part yet. Neither one of us got up from the table and left in a a huff. We had a delightful evening. I’d love to do it again soon. I think she...

  • Gone too soon

    Feb 5, 2026

A tragic car crash took the lives of two young members of our community last week. Two other community members were also involved in the wreck. From those four people, the far reaching effect to our small community is large. Family members, friends and acquiescences feel the effects of a tragedy long after it happens. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to all involved. When tragedy strikes, we are reminded of how fragile and short life is. Hug your people, tell them you love them. Life can change in the blink of an eye....

  • Business representative defends WBC

    Feb 5, 2026

To the editor: It seems there is a lot of division and confusion around economic development currently in the recent Wyoming state legislative sessions. I don’t have all the data and I certainly haven’t been in on all the conversations, but I feel it is my responsibility to share my personal business experience and perspective. It is the voters that I want to share with. I have already shared with the legislators but it is your turn to speak to your legislators on this topic. Hopefully it will help steer our state to continued and greater suc...

  • Thank you!

    Jan 22, 2026

The Wyoming Press Association award plaques on the wall at the Independent Record office date back to 1988. Awards were won prior to that, but older plaques have been replaced by newer ones as the years went by. We enjoy winning awards. Who doesn’t? However, we determine our success through the eyes of our readers. If you are reading, we are succeeding. Our advertisers are a big part of our success, too. We are thankful for your faith in the IR to get the word out about your business, event, service, etc. A community paper is not possible witho...

  • Accidents happen, but being prepared saves lives

    Jan 22, 2026

by Andrew Ellsworth, MD Many of us have been there before—near the top of a ladder, stretching just a little farther to finish the job. Maybe we are cleaning a gutter, hanging Christmas lights, or rescuing a cat from a tree. There is always the temptation to climb one rung higher to reach that final spot. According to CDC data from 2022, accidents are the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. For those ages 1–44, accidents are the leading cause of death. These unintentional injuries include poi...

  • World' largest mineral hot spring

    Jan 15, 2026

I like the letters to the editor page here in the Thermopolis Independent Record! Internet quips are fun, but there’s nothing like a hometown newspaper’s letters to the editor page. My mother was a big time Republican, but it didn’t stop her from chuckling along to Will Rogers, the humorist who often joked about being a Democrat. And who doesn’t like Mark Twain - and a big whopper? So let’s talk about one, a whopper that’s as big as the sky! I love it, the arrows really make it, the whitewashed stone sign on Monument Hill, it’s been there my...

  • I've only lived here for 76 years

    Jan 15, 2026

  • Response to previous letter

    Jan 15, 2026

It is totally inappropriate to call someone hateful and ignorant, and then claim his arguments are not worth responding to. You have responded and here is my answer. You have drawn the conclusion that Islamophobia=Hate. It is only reasonable to be apprehensive of an ideology that calls America the Great Satan, and Israel the Little Satan. Mr. Lambrick, knowledge and love will win in the end; ignorance and hate will not. I invite you to get a copy of the Quran and read it for yourself. It does NOT teach the peace loving religion some say it...

  • Where's my flying car?

    Jan 8, 2026

by Erik Bergquist, Publisher Gillette News Record As we begin 2026, I find myself thinking back to Dec. 31, 1999, when our country was bracing for Y2K and the calendar turning to the year 2000. There was never much real evidence that the new millennium would cause widespread technological failures, but most of us probably had at least a little “what if” in the back of our minds. I rang in the new year at the radio station, waiting to see if January 1 would bring chaos or calm. As it turned out, 2000 arrived without incident. Now here we are...

  • Official business

    Jan 8, 2026

Delbert McLain smiled at the sign in Marvin Pincus’s yard as he walked briskly up to the front door and knocked. Marvin had seen him coming and opened it with a big smile and a handshake. “Delbert! I’ve got to tell you I’ve really been looking forward to seeing what kind of flies we can tie up to improve your love life. You want some coffee?” “Love life?” Del said. “Oh not today, Marvin, not today. I’m here on chamber business. Yessir.” Delbert McLain is our Chamber of Commerce. We have all designated him … well … okay, I guess Del kinda desig...

To slow down and listen. 2026 is the year of the horse, bringing movement and momentum. Truth is revealed, and now we act. Move forward with courage. Happy New...

  • A healthier you in the new year

    Jan 1, 2026

by Kory Zimney, PT, DPT, PhD As the holiday season winds down and the New Year approaches, many of us begin reflecting on the past year and thinking ahead. It’s a natural time to set resolutions—those hopeful promises to ourselves to eat better, move more, stress less or simply live healthier. Yet, despite our best intentions, many resolutions fade by February. Why is lasting change so hard? As a physical therapist helping patients make healthy changes for over 30 years, I have found the answer may lie in how we approach change, by using the...

  • The missing link

    Jan 1, 2026

Go to any education conference, teacher-training clinic or school convention, and what you will typically hear is some version or variation of an emphasis on the dynamics of teaching and learning. On the surface, this would appear to make sense and provide a healthy pedagogical formula. Beneath the surface, however, the most important element in the whole process is often missing: thinking. As an equation, in theory it looks like this: teaching = learning. But anyone who has ever been a teacher (or student) knows, in practice, that is not...

  • Merry Christmas

    Dec 25, 2025

Merry Christmas to everyone who works so hard to make this such a special community in which to live. There is no way to mention all the many ways all the many people contribute to our success and the success of Thermopolis. Just know, all the efforts do not go unnoticed by your friends and neighbors in Hot Springs County. The warmth of friends, family and neighbors make the holiday season special, they also make every day special. Hot Springs County is blessed with many amazing people and we are blessed to be part of it. Thank you for your...

  • The daily work of peace on earth

    Dec 25, 2025

by John Bernhisel The phrase “peace on earth” appears most often this time of year, stitched into hymns and holiday cards and spoken as a hopeful wish. It is familiar, comforting, and easy to say. It is also usually framed as a Christian idea, rooted in the Christmas story and the angels’ proclamation to shepherds. But when you step back, the desire for peace is far older and far larger than any single faith. Across cultures, across religions, across centuries, people have wrestled with the same question: how do we live together without destr...

  • Response to previous letter

    Dec 25, 2025

In reference to Joe Casciato’s December 4 letter to the editor: Someone wiser than me has said “It’s better to remain silent and have them think you are a fool than it is to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” This idea is in Proverbs in the Bible as well. It’s not worth anyone’s time to refute his arguments point by point, but it is a sad reflection of our current state of affairs that Mr. Casciato felt the need to say those hateful and unsupported opinions in a public forum, and for that forum to feel the need to repeat them. Knowledge a...

  • Three paths, one destination

    Dec 25, 2025

There are three great religions that arose within the western tradition, the Hebrew, Christian and Muslim religions. Mohammad records many stories about Jesus and his mother Mary in the Koran. Even though Jesus is never referred to as God, he is still held in the highest degree of honor and respect. In Islamic tradition it is not Mohammad who will return to earth but Jesus himself. Unless of course Mohammad is the Madhi, the Arabic name for the forerunner of the Messiah. But according to this tradition that would be the Prophet Elijah. The...
