  • Haire decision reversed, remanded for new trial

    A verdict in a case against Anthony Haire was reversed, and the case itself remanded for a new trial, following a decision by the Wyoming Supreme Court on Monday. Haire was sentenced about a year ago to 8-10 years with the Wyoming Department of Corrections, on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He was also given a one-year probation sentence on a reckless endangerment charge.     A slide on Thursday afternoon closed a portion of the Black Mountain Oil and Gas Field on public land on the Washakie/Hot Springs county line. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates the landslide to be approximately 10 acres with a depth of 20-30 feet. It destroyed the road to nine wells at the eastern end of the oilfield in Section 31.     According to information from Hot Springs County Deputy Sheriff Jerimie Kraushaar, a call was received about 11 p.m. Saturday from a business owner, who was concerned she had not seen a regular customer, 50-year-old James Michael Pigott of Texas, for a couple days. She also noted his vehicle was located by Anchor Dam. The hotel Pigott was staying at had not heard from him either for a few days.     by Mark Dykes Monday in Hot Springs District Court, two subjects had hearings regarding probation violations. John Baker’s probation was revoked, so he will face three to four years in prison. Baker received the sentence in November. However, it was suspended on a split sentence, resulting instead in a short jail sentence, followed by three years of supervised probation.     by Mark Dykes April precipitation totals across Wyoming were 150 to 160 percent of average. Precipitation numbers varied between near 250 percent of normal over the Tongue River Drainage in north central Wyoming to near 110 percent of normal over the Lower Green Basin in southwestern Wyoming. The current water year, October 2016 to April 2017, precipitation across Wyoming is averaging 140 to 150 percent of average.     Hot Springs County School District #1 Board of Trustees held a special meeting last week to accept resignations and offer initial contracts to incoming teachers.     by Mark Dykes Following a ruling Monday afternoon, there will be no new trial in a case against Matthew Schwan. After a three-day trial, on March 15 Schwan was found guilty of aggravated homicide by vehicle. The charge is from a May 14, 2016 incident during which Reilly Schwan was struck by a vehicle driven by Matthew following a night of drinking with others and an extensive argument between the couple. The charge states he molested a juvenile on July 4 or 5, 2014.   • Unemployment rate drops in HS county

    The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services recently released the unemployment numbers for the month of March across the state. In Hot Springs County, our unemployment rate dropped by .3 percent to 4.4 percent, which amounts to eight fewer citizens being unemployed in March compared to February. The department also reports our labor force was down by 12 in March, but 20 more people were able to find work. That leaves 109 people still looking for work during the month.
