The first annual Kirby Days event, scheduled for July 8, has been cancelled for 2017. Jessica Slagle, Kirby Days Committee member, said due to unforeseen circumstances with the event, the Kirby Town Council made the decision to postpone it. Slagle noted even though the event is cancelled for this year, they have started planning now for the event to happen in 2018. Senior center barbecue celebrates Independence Day The Hot Springs County Senior Center invites everyone to the Independence Day celebration on Monday, July 3 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. This is the third year for the popular event, and hot dogs will be served along with grilled hamburgers. Topping the meal off will be banana splits for dessert, with toppings including chocolate, caramel, strawberries and nuts. The annual Relay for Life is a prominent event and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay team members take turns walking around a track or other set path, with each event lasting anywhere from six to 24 hours. Earlier this year, the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department started looking at purchasing a smoke house. The inflatable house is seen particularly at Fire Prevention Week events, at the department’s open house and the annual health fair. The Wyoming Office of Tourism has released this year’s traveling sticker campaign, featuring four regional stickers as well as an eclipse sticker. The four regions include Salt to Stone, Rockies to Tetons, Black to Yellow and the one we are included in, Park to Park. High water due to recent snow melt runoff in the Wind River has resulted in the closure of campsites at the Boysen State Park Tough Creek Campground. A set of closures of U.S. 20/Wyoming 789 Wednesday and Thursday in Wind River Canyon are intended to help a contractor successfully and safely bring a large rock off the canyon wall to the edge of the highway. It seems when the temperatures rise, so do the number of calls to the Thermopolis Police Department in regard to nuisance yards. In a case against Justin Spence, who was found guilty of incest on April 27, a motion has been filed for a new trial. According to the charge, on July 4 or 5, 2014, Spence molested a juvenile female.
