The Bureau of Reclamation has reopened the access road to the Anchor Reservoir Campground. The road was badly damaged by flood waters at the Owl Creek Middle Fork crossing on June 12. The crossing was temporarily impassable to vehicular traffic, and repairs were recently completed. Anchor Dam and Reservoir are features of the Owl Creek Unit in Hot Springs County, approximately 35 miles west of Thermopolis via highways 120 and 170. The site is very remote and has a vault toilet and primitive camping....
Construction is underway at the Gooseberry Badlands Scenic Overlook Trail northwest west of Thermopolis. The trail remains open, but be mindful of equipment and frequently changing signage to guide you in and out safely. The crew is currently working on the parking area, the upper ADA portion of the trail and the access road, with construction on the lower trail scheduled for mid-September. Keep an eye out for possible temporary closures at that time....
A free, exclusive petroglyph tour with Dr. Larry Loendorf is planned for Saturday, September 23. Dr. Loendorf has conducted cutting edge archaeological research for over six decades. As Wyoming experiences more West Nile virus (WNV) activity this season than over the past decade or so, the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) is emphasizing mosquito bite prevention. There have been 20 cases reported, including a death in an older adult Fremont County woman, among Wyoming residents so far this year. Of these, 12 cases have involved the more severe neuroinvasive type of illness. The Hot Springs County Fair Board and Recreation Board are moving forward to install a digital sign at the fairgrounds in the same location as their previous sign.
