They are more of a formality, he noted, as there is a checklist of performance standards that is part of the application process. This checklist i...

When disaster strikes — be it natural or man-made — it’s important to get out as much information as possible so people know what’s happening in their community. Hot Springs County Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Gordon explained once a year CodeRED gets a database download of landlines. However, having cell phone numbers in the system is just as important, and the only way to get these numbers is from the owners. When a natural disaster, or something more dangerous happens, voice message...

The Legend Rock petroglyph site northwest of town is one of living history, helping tell the story of the area. Among those who formed the rock art thousands of years ago, Jordon Norris wasn't likely. The name appears on one of the rocks at Legend Rock, however, and Parks Superintendent Kevin Skates said he was notified of the vandalism about two weeks ago; the Sheriff's Office is helping investigate it. There’s no doubt the public restrooms located next to Town Hall are a convenience for those who are walking the downtown area or out for a drive. Mayor Mike Mortimore said the restrooms are something they try to keep open during the week — 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday — but the vandalism to them is often ridiculous. He added the restrooms are closed in the winter for that reason. The downtown restrooms are not alone in this, as those at Candy Jack Park see their fair share, with people climb...

"Messy, untimely and completely out of the box" is how artist Jackson Hendrickson describes himself. Using spray paint as his medium, some might see him as a "graffiti" artist, though Hendrickson believes a lot of the terminology gets lost in translation and "graffiti" is often used as the go-to word; rather, he sees what he does as mural artwork. His art helps "get the boring out of the walls," and gives people something to look at. At a recent meeting, the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of...

Tuesday night, the Thermopolis Town Council approved a request to have a specially designated area for setting off fireworks on Independence Day. Though it happens every year, I’m always surprised at how quickly the holiday gets here. Of course in my Nebraska hometown this is typically the time of year when one of two things is happening — I’m being driven nuts by the amount of bangs, pops and whizzes going off long into the night, or — more likely — I’m getting together with some friends to...
