Gale Dwayne 'Glide' Harms

Gale Dwayne "Glide" Harms, 83, passed away on July 17, 2026, in Dickinson, N. D. He was born on November 29, 1942, in Ovid, Colo., to Leonard and Viola (Schwartz) Harms.

Gale proudly served his country as a radarman in the United States Navy before continuing his education at Weber State University and the University of Cincinnati. His career reflected a lifelong commitment to public service and environmental stewardship. He worked as an environmental engineer for the State of Wyoming, a health and safety trainer for Hercules Aerospace in Utah, and an educator at the University of New Mexico and Turtle Mountain Community College in North Dakota.

Throughout his life, Gale was a dedicated advocate for environmental stewardship and the responsible use of natural resources. He contributed to environmental legislation with former U.S. Senator Alan K. Simpson of Wyoming, led passive solar building workshops, and worked alongside Native communities to address environmental concerns related to petroleum development while advocating for the responsible stewardship of their natural resources. He believed that knowledge carried a responsibility-to educate, encourage, and leave the world better than he found it.

Whether serving his country, protecting the environment, mentoring others, or forging friendships across North America, Gale approached life with purpose, curiosity, and an unwavering belief that every person deserved to be heard.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gale embraced life with curiosity and adventure. Whether exploring the open road on his motorcycle, sharing what he had learned, or simply listening with genuine interest, he found joy in connecting with people and the world around him. He cherished his independence and embraced the freedom to follow his convictions, explore new horizons, and live life on his own terms. Those who knew him will remember his wit, compassion, adventurous spirit, and his remarkable ability to make others feel genuinely heard and valued.

Gale's friendships spanned the continent and beyond, from Canada to Costa Rica, reflecting a life rich in experiences, meaningful connections, and generous service to others.

He is survived by his daughter, Kristine (Harms) Paoli; beloved grandsons, Kelton and Jakob Paoli; siblings, Leonard Harms Jr., Bernadine Smith, and Warren Harms; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.
