Carol Lynn Kilzer

1944-2025

Carol Lynn Kilzer Larson died November 27, 2025 in Thermopolis, Wyo.

Carol was born April 11, 1944, at Homer, Neb., to Paul and Lela (Kellner) Kilzer. She was welcomed home by older sisters, Jeanette and Marilyn, and older brother Darrell.

Carol loved living on a farm and being a tomboy. She enjoyed playing football, basketball, and softball with her brother Darrell, trying to keep up with him but never quite succeeded. She tamed every cat that was born in the barn. Going to the timber to play and pick wildflowers was a favorite pastime.

Carol attended Walthill Public School K-12 graduating in 1962. She graduated from Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, lowa, and then worked as Branch Secretary for General Adjustment Bureau in Sioux City until 1965 when she moved to Ames, Iowa, and was employed as secretary in the Biomedical Engineering Department.

After hearing her older sister Jeanette’s story and enthusiasm for the mountains of Colorado, she moved to Boulder in 1967, again working as Branch Secretary for General Adjustment Bureau (GAB). She was offered the position of Branch Secretary in Denver at GAB and transferred there in 1972.

It was there she met Jim Larson who also worked for GAB. They enjoyed spending time outside of Denver hiking in the mountains. Jim, not liking the city life of Denver, transferred to GAB in Thermopolis in March of 1974. A proposal to Carol soon followed and they were married in Boulder, Colo., on August 25, 1974.

Carol was employed as secretary at Ralph Witters Elementary School for Hot Springs County School District for two years. She then was employed as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools and Board of Trustees until her retirement in 2006.

Carol and Jim enjoyed 45 years of summertime camping at “their” Big Horn Mountains, particularly Boulder Park Campground.

After retiring, Carol enjoyed assisting with Wednesday Fellowship at Church, and volunteering at the Wyoming Pioneer Home. After retiring from camping, Carol enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables. She always considered herself and was proud of being a farm girl.

Carol and Jim celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2024 with a Larson family reunion at the YMCA of the Rockies near Estes Park, Colo.. They then celebrated again with Carol’s family members in Ft. Collins, Colo.

Carol was a member of Community Federated Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Jim’s parents; brother, Darrell; sisters-in-law, Elaine Woodson and Mary Nell DeBlois; and brother-in-law, Dr. Dale Hein.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; sisters, Jeanette (Paul) Vohs and Marilyn Hein; sisters-in-law, Ruth (David) Nice and Judy Kilzer; brother-in-law, Joe DeBlois; and her many nieces and nephews whom she considered “her kids.”

Services will be held at 11 a.m. at Community Federated Church on Friday, December 5, 2025, with burial to follow at Monument Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Community Federated Church, PO Box 826 Thermopolis, Wyoming 82443 or HSC Education Endowment Foundation, PO Box 1297, Thermopolis WY 82443.
