Edward Leroy Shaffer

1940-2025

Edward Leroy Shaffer, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 27, 2025. He was born in Thermopolis on July 23, 1940, to Glenn Dale & Helen Kobielusz Shaffer. He was raised on Sunnyside Lane and went to work for local ranches by the age of 12. He graduated Hot Springs County High School in 1958 and went on to rodeo, working at Anchor Dam, South Pass Steel Mine, and other small jobs. But he loved the Cowboy lifestyle and it never left him.

Ed married Peggy Schaff in 1964 and they had 4 children, Dale, Valerie, Lesli and Kurt. He returned to ranching and went to work for Clarke Jackman at the Mill Iron in 1967. In 1968 he moved his growing family to the HD Ranch where he worked and managed until his retirement over 30 years later. His loves were God, family, and being horseback. Even though he was quiet, his faith was evident in his love for his Savior, family, neighbors and friends. He was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2015 along with his wife, Peggy.

Survivors include sons, Dale (Shyla) Shaffer and Kurt (Lisa) Shaffer; daughters, Valerie (Luke) Mead and Lesli (Scott) Harvey all of Thermopolis; sister, Doris Ann Ready; brothers, Dean and Danny (Diana) of Thermopolis; sisters-in-law, Carole Martinez of Kaycee, Wyo., Eloise Shaffer of Thermopolis, and Sandy Shaffer of Evanston; grandchildren, Jayci, Bradyn (Shailee), Bryce, Baylee, Dylan, Riley (Braidy), and Sydney; 7 great-grandchildren; and close friend Eileen Johnson.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Peggy in 2012; parents; brothers, Walt and Joe; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Bob & Bernadine Blacketer, Lee Martinez, Dean Ready, Carrie Shaffer.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Hot Springs County Museum. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church with graveside service to follow at Monument Hill Cemetery.
