Artists shine at symposium

The annual Wyoming State High School Art Symposium was held April 19-21 at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper. This year was the 55th State High School Art Symposium. An estimated 5,000 pieces of student artwork were displayed this year.

Hot Springs County High School's Jennifer Emery's art students had a great time attending and participating in the show. Chloe Mascorro, Hannah Lippincott, Jessen Basse, Zoey Larson, Lauren Thomas, Maddisyn Tjepkes, Rosalie Willson, and Audrey Hensley all received blue ribbons.

In addition to a blue ribbon for a submitted work of art, Rosalie Willson also received the special honor of having one of her art pieces selected for a First Lady Art Award. Wyoming's first lady Jennie Gordon herself selected this piece and it will be displayed in the governor's mansion in Cheyenne for one year.

Emery said, "It is extremely rewarding as an art teacher to watch the growth of my students year to year. All of my high school art students are invited to come on the field trip to Casper for the viewing of the state art event. Typically, the bulk of student work selected to go as a submission in the show is from art students that are in my Art 2, Art 3, and Art 4 classes. The selection of work must meet the criteria of originality and outstanding craftsmanship."

She added, "At the art symposium before the public viewing, there is a night of judging where blue ribbons are awarded to artworks that stand out as exceptional. To receive a blue ribbon is a distinguishing honor and very encouraging to our students who receive it. Beginning art students that participate in the event often feel excited to continue their learning in more advanced art classes and the possibility of creating pieces that could go to state art. My advanced students feel encouraged and proud to show off their art that represents their passions and interests and to get recognition for the years of hard work they put into developing their craft."
