Volunteers - the silent heroes

by Judy Carswell

The silent heroes that exist within our community are so amazing!

I am talking about our friends and neighbors that have been volunteers for the People for People Programs, providing meals here in our community since 1988 (34 years).

Every Sunday they prepare meals (sometimes paying for the meal) and deliver to our friends that may need a helping hand. They speak with each person they deliver a meal with a smile on their face, while checking to make sure they are doing okay and tell them to have a nice day.

Also, the Backpack Program volunteers that have worked so hard over the last eight years, since 2014, tirelessly working to provide meals to our kids in our community. Unloading and packing bags of food, making sure no child shows up to school Monday morning unable to learn because they have not eaten over the weekend.

They keep feeding these wonderful children giving them a chance to succeed. These people donate their time to make our community a better place. They are all super humans! But are simply called volunteers. They never complain, they just keep showing up until they are unable to make it no longer.

Over the last 34 years there have been lots of volunteers that have donated their time to these programs. We have seen them in their prime. We have seen some pass. We tell them Thank You, but is it really enough? There is no way to thank you all enough! And you just keep helping. We couldn’t do this without you Please remember, when your volunteer shows up, please thank them. They are here happily providing you a service.

Judy Carswell and Ranae Baldes, People for People coordinators and Backpack Program coordinators, say there are always volunteer opportunities with the People for People Backpack Program.

Join a team to prepare a Sunday meal, help unload a truck, be an alternate driver on Sunday delivery, pack bags of food for holiday meals, etc.

Become one of the silent heroes, volunteer today!
