Sign up for community garden spot

Want to grow a garden this summer? Come, sign up for a community garden plot on Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Hot Springs County Library, 344 Arapahoe Street. The garden plots are 4ft x 8ft. and are $20 each. For more information, call Kelly Strampe at 307-870-2726.

Kelly Strampe is the coordinator, and she said, “We want to try to reach people who are interested in gardening and maybe other first-time gardeners at the time. The plots are not really big, you know, but it’s kind of nice for a first-time gardener to just have a smaller space to try it out. And it’s kind of amazing how much can be grown in these smaller plots too.”

During the sign ups, Red Dirt Master Gardeners are hosting a plant swap. Refreshments will be available.

Strampe also mentioned the possibility of mentoring and she said, “We’ve seen four people that just have had a really nice variety of things at the garden. But there are master gardeners that are there if you’re a first-time gardener. There are people who are keen to help and give you a little bit of advice around your questions, too.”

Also, Strampe said they will hopefully find someone to be an AmeriCorps person for the Garden. Strampe added that they already have the funding for the potential AmeriCorps person. The responsibility of this role is to be the contact person of the garden and who will be around the garden more. They have had the role filled for the past few years, but they are looking for someone local to apply and who is interested.

Additionally, the community garden is working with the Grow A Little Extra Program, which is part of the Governor’s wife Hunger Initiative. Strampe said, “They’re marvelous, really. The community really responded. And the produce that they gave to us. The Master Gardeners are the ones who are coordinating that now this year.”

Strampe added, “The goal is for communities around the state is to have somebody or some group that will do that. So we’re coordinating that again and hope that people will donate extra produce. The Lazy Fox is going to be our collection point again. And we’re trying to get some funding for our refrigerator where we could put the produce.”
