On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Monday, Dec. 27

10:26 p.m. A deputy assisted emergency medical services in the transport of a patient to the hospital. 

Tuesday, Dec. 28

12:42 p.m. Report of an accident on the north side of Hospital Hill involving a 17-year-old male driver from Ten Sleep and a 19-year-old passenger where a pickup truck flipped over on its side. There were no reported injuries. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

The Sheriff’s office said the road conditions were quite treacherous because of ice and snow. Sand trucks were brought out and the northbound lane of the road was closed for about one hour.

8:50 p.m. Report of an agency assist where a deputy provided backup for Highway Patrol at mile marker 119 in the Wind River Canyon. A driver, who had been pulled over, was upset. 

Thursday, Dec. 30

1:42 p.m. Report of a court violation involving a 39-year-old male who was on bond conditions for no consumption of alcohol.

The deputy was performing a paper service and found the subject intoxicated. The deputy requested to do a portable breath test. The results showed a BAC of 0.171. The deputy forwarded the matter to the county attorney for potential charges. 

7:07 p.m. Report of a welfare check involving an 89-year-old female. The deputy found her to be OK. 

Friday, Dec. 31

4:39 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a civil dispute with a business. There was a possible misunderstanding and the call was determined to be unfounded. 

Saturday, Jan. 1

3:23 p.m. Report of a possible drunk driver. The deputy was unable to locate the vehicle. 

Sunday, Jan. 2

2:56 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 60-year-old male who was at a location he did not have permission to be.

Monday, Dec. 27

5:48 p.m. A subject was provided with a meal card.

10:40 p.m. Report of a false alarm in the northeast corner of Hot Springs County with Enbridge Pipeline.

Tuesday, Dec. 28

11:40 a.m. Report of a male subject who had missed a doctor’s appointment. An officer located him and he was OK.

4:38 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 42-year-old male who stayed at a motel during frigid temperatures and was still in the room. The subject paid the bill and moved on.

9:50 p.m. Leigh June Darlynn Leod Heaven, 18, from Fort Washakie, was arrested for alleged driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, plant, open container, not having a valid driver’s license, inoperable headlights, minor in possession of alcohol and tobacco. 

10:20 p.m. Report of a warrant arrest from Albany County involving a 16-year-old male juvenile from Fort Washakie. The juvenile was released, as Albany County did not want to come get him. 

Wednesday, Dec. 29

10:12 a.m. Report of vandalism involving a vehicle whose tires were punctured in the sidewall. There are no suspects. 

2:40 p.m. Report of a pending trespass notice serviced to a 63-year-old male for a location at the 400 block of North 6th Street.

8:16 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 55-year-old mother and her 26-year-old son who has medical issues. The officer stayed with the subject until he calmed down. 

9:47 p.m. Report of information involving a dog in distress. The owner called the police department as they were out of town. Someone was taking care of the dog who has separation issues. The dog was OK.

Thursday, Dec. 30

3:57 a.m. Report of a welfare check on a 64-year-old male subject in the 900 block of Amoretti who was said to be incoherent. The officer determined he did not need immediate medical attention but said they should call for an ambulance if necessary. 

9:49 a.m. Report of a follow-up for missing John Hammond, whose apartment was found unlocked. Hammond was not located and the information was forwarded to Carbon County authorities. 

1:59 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 64-year-old male and a 64-year-old female who had a trespass notice served against a 38-year-old female. 

Friday, Dec. 31

8:38 a.m. Report of a recovered vehicle involving an officer that stopped a 2009 Kenwood truck and trailer from Nevada that was reported stolen from Nevada. The driver actually had purchased the vehicle in 2019 and the previous owner forgot to update it as not being stolen. 

1:08 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 59-year-old male who showed an officer a possible drug paraphernalia light bulb with a hole in it. The officer tested it and the results were a presumptive positive for meth. The officer kept the bulb. 

7:21 p.m. Report of fireworks at a trailer park near Highway 20 South. The officer was unable to locate any fireworks. 

Saturday, Jan. 1

9:03 a.m. A 27-year-old male subject was provided a place to stay for the night.

10 p.m. An officer assisted emergency medical services in the transport of a patient to the hospital. 

Sunday, Jan. 2

10:42 a.m. Report of drugs involving a 28-year-old female was cited for speeding and a 26-year-old male was cited for possession of a controlled subject, plant. Both subjects are from Denver. 

12:30 p.m. An officer assisted emergency medical services in the transport of a patient to the hospital. 

 1:55 p.m. John Brooks Welch, 39, was arrested for allegedly driving while his license was canceled. 

Monday, Jan. 3

5 p.m. The body of Leland ‘Lee’ Morton, Jr., 72, was located in the area of Cottonwood Creek. He had been in a vehicle accident several days prior to the discovery, which was made by someone moving cattle in the area.
