On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Tuesday, Nov. 16

2:43 p.m. Report of fraud involving an online scam where a subject applied for a job and was hired. The employer then sent a check to the subject and wanted them to deposit it and send back a portion of the money. The subject tried to do this and the bank caught the transaction in the moment as the check was fraudulent. The subject was not out of any money. The scam was through the Whats App. 

3:04 p.m. Report of an emergency involving a 911 hang-up. As the deputy was heading out, the call was canceled as the subject who hung up was contacted and found fine.  

Wednesday, Nov. 17

12:02 p.m. Report of fraud involving a subject who received numerous fraud calls from places such as Publishers Clearing House, receiving new inheritances and new vehicles. The female subject was asked to get gift cards, and she gave out the numbers from the cards. The subject was embarrassed and did not reveal how much money she lost. 

Thursday, Nov. 18

7:48 a.m. Ian Ray Williams, 40, was arrested for alleged domestic battery. 

8:32 a.m. Joseph Michael Leroy Grant, 31, of Casper, was arrested on a Hot Springs County warrant for probation revocation with original charges of property destruction and a meth case. Grant was picked up from Natrona County. 

12:19 p.m. Report of an agency assist involving a train possibly on fire coming from Washakie County. The deputy and Sheriff responded and observed when the train rolled through town to be OK. The call was unfounded. 

Saturday, Nov. 20

9:56 p.m. Darren Dumas, 34, of both Thermopolis and Utah, has failed to register as a sex offender. He was well over the time allotted to notify authorities. Dumas was known to be staying at 1018 Richards Street. Dumas’s case is being forward to the Hot Springs County Attorney’s office.

7:20 a.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a subject living in the area of Nakamura Lane whose home was possibly damaged from pellets from duck hunters.

Monday, Nov. 15

4:49 p.m. Report of a welfare check involving a 44-year-old female in the 500 block of Ryan Street. She was fine.

Tuesday, Nov. 16

10:03 a.m. Report of a suspicious person parked in the 800 block of South 6th Street. The officer investigated and found the man was waiting for a friend from Worland to go swimming but never came. The subject then returned to Riverton. 

3:56 p.m. Report of an extra patrol involving a request from an elderly homeowner who thought kids were banging at the door to their home. 

Wednesday, Nov. 17

1:20 p.m. Nathan David Andrew, 23, was arrested on a warrant for child abuse charges in Nebraska and for failure to appear in court to do a change of plea hearing. 

1:42 p.m. Report of a sex offense incident. The report is pending. 

Thursday, Nov. 18

11:37 a.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 38-year-old female who was receiving threatening texts from a male in Casper who used to be on a protection order that has expired. The officer advised the subject to change her number or block the caller.

2:11 p.m. Report of a welfare check involving a 53-year-old male hitchhiker who was located at the ice rink at Hospital Hill. The reporting party thought he was intoxicated, but he was not. He was trying to get to Montana and was OK.

2:24 p.m. Report of theft in the 500 block of Arapaho Street involving some missing dealer plates. There are no suspects. 

Friday, Nov. 19

10:17 a.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a subject who was concerned about a single apple that was thrown in his yard and was thought to be poisonous or someone trying to hit his dogs. 

3:07 p.m. Report of an accident in the 600 block of South 6th Street in a parking lot. The officer investigated and found both drivers to be at fault. 

5:28 p.m. Report of a possible drunk driver involving a Chevy pickup entering town from the Hospital Hill. The reporting party observed the vehicle going fast and driving all over the road. Several officers responded but were unable to locate the vehicle. 

9:17 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving a 50-year-old female who was going through a divorce. Her ex-husband was allowed to come to pick up his belongings. The female subject wanted law enforcement to know she didn’t know where his guns were located. 

Saturday, Nov. 20

5:46 p.m. Report of a suspicious vehicle involving a small black SUV that was taking pictures of buildings. The officer was unable to locate the vehicle. 

9:38 p.m. Report of a consent search during a traffic stop at 8th & Shoshoni Street. The 18-year-old female driver admitted she had a partial pack of cigarettes and allowed the officer to search her vehicle. The officer destroyed the cigarettes and released the subject with no citations. 

10:29 p.m. Report of a probation violation involving a 63-year-old male who was found with recently purchased, unopened alcohol while he was on probation. The officer asked the subject to pour out all his alcohol onto the ground. He did so and was released. 

Sunday, Nov. 21

10 a.m. An officer assisted emergency medical services in the transport of a patient to the hospital. 

11:17 p.m. Report of noise in the 100 block of Warren Street involving a 26-year-old male subject who was yelling at a dog. The officer was able to calm him down. The officer is getting professional help for the subject.
