IR receives honors

The Thermopolis independent Record was named winner of typographic excellence honors of small weekly newspapers in the state during the Wyoming Press Association’s annual convention last weekend.

Judging criteria for the typographic excellence award includes: photo reproduction, type reproduction, selection of type for news and advertising and design and layout.

Along with the major award earned by the entire IR staff, three Pacemaker awards were earned for photographs.

Jurri Schenck won second place in small weeklies for his feature photo taken during National Pi Day activities at Thermopolis Middle School. Judges comments were “Good storytelling, nice framing and composition. Overall great photo.”

Donna Pennoyer received an honorable mention for her feature photo of the tire roll relay taken at the Ag Olympics during Hot Springs County Fair. Judges comments were “Nice action shot of something unique. Good framing and composition. Great photo.

Lara Love won second place in the scenic category for her photo featuring a snowy scene of three people kayaking on the Bighorn River in November of 2019. Judges comments were “Phenomenal photo. The geese!”

The WPA is a trade association representing Wyoming’s newspapers in areas including lobbying, public relations and advertising.

The award ceremonies held virtually Saturday capped the association’s 122nd annual convention, which was held via video conference this year because of concerns over the coronavirus.
