On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Sheriff’s Office

Tuesday, Feb 4

5:03 p.m. Deputy assisted an ambulance in the transport of a patient to the hospital.

5:31 p.m. Subject got their vehicle stuck on the east side of the Broadway bridge because of snow. A tow truck was called in. There were no injuries.

7:15 p.m. Alicea R. Jones, 38, of Thermopolis, was arrested and held on an alleged probation violation. 

10:25 p.m. Report of a vehicle spun out and hit the guardrail at mile maker 134 Highway 20 North.

Wednesday, Feb 5

12:25 a.m. Report of a matter north of town between a tenant and landlord. Deputy advised parties as it was a civil issue and stood by. There were no incidents or citations. 

Thursday, Feb 6

11:52 a.m. Report of two vehicles striking each other at 5th and Broadway, the flag pole intersection. Snow piles were blocking their views. Both drivers hit brakes, slid on the ice and could not stop. The Town of Thermopolis was informed about the snow piles blocking the views of drivers.

1:10 p.m. Report of a vehicle stuck at mile marker 142 Highway 20 North. Deputy arrived and did not find anyone.

Friday, Feb 7

8:54 p.m. Report of a vehicle in a ditch at mile maker 137 Highway 20 North. The deputy found the vehicle with no one inside. There was a report of a subject walking down the road. Deputy went a residence to investigate and the subject refused to answer the door. The vehicle was towed away by Highway Patrol.

4:21 p.m. Cynthia M. Adams, 34, of Basin, was arrested for alleged probation revocation.

Police Department

Tuesday, Feb 4

2:17 a.m. Police assisted a citizen who high centered their vehicle on a street and then got out.

11:28 a.m. Paul Douglas Mathewson, 53, of Thermopolis was arrested for alleged probation violation.

4:15 p.m. Report of a subject who lost a large set of keys. They have not been turned in,

Wednesday, Feb 5

1:25 p.m. Report of an accident where a vehicle backed out of a driveway and hit a postal vehicle.  No citations were issued.

5:14 p.m. Private repossession company advised the police department they were picking up a vehicle. 

Thursday, Feb 6

11:58 a.m Officer assisted an ambulance in the transport of a patient to the hospital.

5:58 p.m. Report of a vehicle stuck in the roadway. Other people helped push the vehicle out.

10:06 p.m. Report of a subject on probation trying to hide from a police officer. The subject was released later.

Friday, Feb 7

12:35 a.m. Report of suspicious activity where a subject was thought to be inside a business after hours. Offices checked and found no one inside.

8:58 a.m. Report of two individuals trespassing on a residence.  There are no charges at this time.

10:52 a.m Report of potential harassment with two individuals. Officer advised subjects to leave each other alone. There are no citations as of yet. 

11:50 a.m. Jeffery Scot Averill, 22, was arrested for the alleged possession of marijuana and driving while under suspension. 

12:49 p.m. Report of a suspicious smell of burning tires. Officer investigated and did not locate burning tires. The smell might have been from the exhaust of heavy equipment during snow removal.  

10:11 p.m. Report of a couple fighting. Officer arrived and did not find anyone.

10:33 p.m. Caldwell G. Whittaker, 60, of Thermopolis, was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol. 

11:51 p.m. Report of an intoxicated subject laying on the ground outside a business. The subject did have a ride called and was picked up to go home.

Saturday, Feb 8

6:07 p.m. Report of a business where someone threw items away in a garbage can and wanted them removed.

Sunday, Feb 9

12:04 p.m. There was a major accident in Wind River Canyon. The highway through the canyon was closed in both directions for approximately two hours. Official report pending.

Monday, Feb 10

10:10 a.m. Report of an accident of a vehicle rear-ending a semi-truck.

1:36 p.m. Report of information regarding escapees from Montana being spotted in town. Police investigated subjects and found they were not the escapees. 

10:33 p.m. Report of a potential drunk driver. Officer did not find probable cause to stop the vehicle. 

Circuit Court

Timothy M. Hoyer, driving while license is canceled, suspended or revoked, fees and fines $425.

Lanny R. Schneider, failed to provide proof of liability insurance, fees and fines $545.

Michael D. Mccarthey, driving while license is canceled, suspended or revoked , fees and fines $100.

Shandra D. Hunt, failed to provide proof of liability insurance, fees and fines $545.

Births

Luke Athe Olsen was born Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at Powell Valley Healthcare to Jan and Russell Olsen.

He weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long.

Grandparents are Randall and Violet Olsen and Brian and Jane Robertson.
