Planes nearly double for fly-in

The fifth annual Fly In at Hot Springs County Airport on Saturday had 25 total aircraft, according to Fixed Base Operator Nate Messenger. That number is almost double the 14 seen last year.

It was definitely a better turnout, Messenger said, and though there was nothing different about the event - aside from English muffins as the breakfast rather than pancakes - he believes it's because he got some fliers in the right places. Typically he mails them out, but this year he handed them out to people coming through and they likely got together with others and planned to attend.

The planes were single engine piston, Messenger said, and among the oldest were some Cessna 172's from 1962. One plane that certainly gathered some attention was a Yak-52 Model TW. Though it certainly appeared older, Messenger noted it was a 2005. A Russian trainer plane, this model is still in production.

Though a couple of the common sights - a helicopter and a life flight team - were absent from this year's event, Messenger expects they'll return in 2020. He expressed his appreciation for everyone coming out to support the Fly In and the airport, and all who volunteered.
