Doris Anita Smith, 88, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Anita was born in Lawrence County, Ill., on July 10, 1930, to Eugene and Beatrice Poland.

Anita married Jerry Smith, her high school sweetheart, on August 30, 1949, in Franklin, Ky. After getting married, they moved to Caldwell, Ohio, and then to Olney, Ill., for a short while. Then they moved to the family farm in Sumner, Ill., and in 1970 they moved to Thermopolis, Wyo.,

The family loved any opportunity to travel and one time purchased brand new vinyl seat covers with a lifetime warranty! The kids wore that new seat cover out in one trip! They enjoyed taking the kids to Washington D.C. and on a separate occasion went to New York City. They took one of the tour buses on a four-hour excursion around the Big Apple and after that tour they had to get out of the city!

The Smith family always had a large garden that the kids got to weed. Anita was an excellent cook, collected dolls and also loved to quilt. Additionally, she enjoyed her personal time painting.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Smith of Thermopolis; sons, Jerry (RaDonna) Smith of Cheyenne, Wyo., Marty (Norma) Smith of Thermopolis, Dan Smith of Casper, Wyo., and Don (Natalie) Smith of Lawrenceville, Ill.; sister, Norma (Telly) Mushrush of St. Mathews, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Anita is preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, June Poland.

Funeral services were held at The Church of Christ on February 12. Burial followed at Monument Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association; 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or The Church of Christ. Arrangements have been entrusted to Veile Mortuary.
