Ruth C. Mathews

Former Thermopolis resident, Ruth C. Mathews, 91, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018, in Riverton, Wyo., after a period of declining health.

Born August 6, 1927, in Berthoud, Colo., she was one of 15 children of Christian "Chris" and Catherine (Braun) Hill.

On March 9, 1947, she married Melvin Hamilton "Mel" Mathews in Torrington, Wyo. To this union was born five children. The couple moved to Thermopolis in 1972 where Ruth was employed with Wyoming Gas for many years and various other businesses as a clerk.

She was a member of Community Federated Church. All her life she loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was an avid Bronco and Colorado Rockies fan. She also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her children, Larry Mathews and Marilyn Jones, both of Riverton and Bill Mathews of Thermopolis; twin sister, Rachel Schreiner of Torrington; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a young daughter, Joyce Ellen; husband, Mel; daughter, Janis Elaine Matthews; seven brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 20 at 2 p.m. at the Community Federated Church with Rev. Chuck Cooper of Community Church, and Pastor Matt Gordon and Moderator Dennis Russell of the Torrington First Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be beside her husband, Mel, in the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington.
