Mary Drake


Mary Margaret Drake, 94, of Story City, Iowa, passed away June 25, 2018, at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Mary was born June 12, 1924, to Paul and Eleanor Louise (McDonald) Weatherby in Sioux City, Iowa. She married Lawrence Drake on September 24, 1947. He died December 20, 1990. Mary attended Morningside College in Sioux City and received her Master's degree from at Drake University in Des Moines. Mary taught special education at Denison, Iowa and then at Big Horn Basin Children's Center in Thermopolis, Wyo.

Mary enjoyed baking, gardening, shopping, traveling all over the United States, going to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school activities, and spending time with her family. Mary was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Ames and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Thermopolis. She was also a member of the Eastern Star PEO and Questers.

Mary is survived by daughters, Sally Rutz of Clinton, Iowa, Mary Reitano of Story City and Julie Georgius of Roland, Iowa; sons, Steve Drake of Idaho, Dan Drake of Story City and David (Margaret) Drake of Cheyenne, Wyo .; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; and a son, Eddy Paul Drake.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 2 at Fairview Lodge located on Grove Avenue in Story City.
