Cole wins third conference championship

The Thermopolis Middle School wrestling team hit the mats Saturday for their conference at Powell, taking 109.5 team points.

Coach Toby Emery expressed congratulations to eighth grade wrestler Logan Cole, who won a third straight conference championship in the "A" division.

Wresting in A Division 220, Cole scored 24 team points. He took three victories by fall over his opponents - 27 seconds against Trey Wright of Worland in the quarterfinals, 1:29 against Blake Walters of Riverton in the semis and 2:22 against Tate Clutter of Greybull/Cloud Peak in the first place match.

Emery further stated, "The boys had a strong showing at conference this year. Six of our ten wrestlers placed. There were some close matches throughout the day; some went our way, and some did not. Either way, the boys battled every match, win or lose, and that's what counts! I was very pleased with our team's performance."

In A Division 91 - Carson Williams did not place and scored no team points. Williams received a bye in Championship Round 1, and lost by a 1:38 fall to Paxton Rees of Riverton in the quarterfinals and by a 12-4 decision against Lucas Talich of Cody in Consolation Round 2.

In A Division 98, Wyatt McDermott placed second and scored 18 team points. McDermott won by a 47-second fall over Jake Schlattmann of Greybull/Cloud Peak in the quarterfinals and by a 26-second fall over Connor Carey of Lander in the semis, but lost by a 4-2 decision against Elijah Hernandez of Riverton in the first place match.

In A Division 105, Roedy Farrell placed first and scored 23.5 team points. Farrell received a bye in Championship Round 1, and won by a 3:25 fall over Trey Draper of Riverton in the quarterfinals, by a 4-1 decision against Keefer Thomas of Powell in the semifinals and by a 15-0 tech fall over Dawson Rogers of Worland in the first place match.

In A Division 120 - Jarek Sorensen did not place and scored no team points. Sorenson lost by a 21-second fall to Tyler Grenz of Cody in the quarterfinals, received a bye in Consolation Round 1 and lost by a 10-2 majority decision against Colton Woffinden of Worland.

In B Division 77, Charlie Sandberg did not place and scored three team points. Sandberg lost by a 9-8 decision against Treven Beckman of Rocky Mountain in the quarterfinals, but won by a 3:22 fall over Kamden Hinkle of Riverton in Consolation Round 1. He lost by a 43-second fall to Shawn Lamb of Riverton in the consolation semifinals.

In the same division, Tanner Jensen placed fourth and scored 10 team points. Jensen lost by a 2:14 fall to Lamb in the quarterfinals, but won by a 27-second fall over Jacob Bash of Cody in Consolation Round 1 and by a 3:32 fall over Beckman in the consolation semis. He lost by a 1:54 fall to Lamb in the third place match.

In B Division 84, Sean Johansen did not place and scored two team points. He won by 8-7 decision against Hunter Peterson of Riverton in Championship Round 1, but lost by a 3:47 fall to Justin Womack of Lander in the quarterfinals. Johansen received a bye in Consolation Round 2, and lost by a 29-second fall to Keldon Boettcher of Rocky Mountain in Consolation Round 3.

In B Division 115, Matt Music placed third and scored 16 team points. In Championship Round 1, Music received a bye. He lost by a 56-second fall to Asher Nicholson of Lovell in the quarterfinals, but won by a 2:35 fall over Bryce Woffinden in Consolation Round 2, by a 40-second fall over Ryan Nunn of Lovell in Consolation Round 3, in sudden victory over Jude Eppler of Riverton in the consolation semis and by a 2:08 fall over Kade Fitzgerald of Cody in the third place match.

In B Division 175, Austin Barral placed first and scored 16 team points. Barral took his win in the first place match by a 2:13 fall over John Haley of Greybull/Cloud Peak.

The boys will round out their season with the Riverton Spartan Invite this Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
