Students join Military Service

Three seniors and one junior at Hot Springs County High School have joined military service in recent months while finishing their high school education.

Seniors Jessica Schierkolk, Fawn Rush and Cameron Igou, and junior Michael Harvey have been sworn in at their respective Military Entrancy Processing Stations.

Private Schierkolk was sworn in the U.S. Army as active duty at the MEPS in Butte, Mont. last September for a three-year hitch. She leaves for 10-week basic training in late June. After graduating in September, she will be going for advanced individual training in Fort Sill, Okla. before being stationed stateside or abroad. She comes from a long-line of family members who served in various branches of the military.

Private Rush joined the National Guard at the MEPS in Salt Lake City in July of 2015. She does her monthly drills at either Guernsey or Worland. She leaves for ten weeks of basic training in June, followed by seven weeks of advanced individual training.

Seaman Igou had his swearing-in ceremony at the MEPS in Denver for the U.S. Navy, February 9. He will be doing delayed entry processing in Cheyenne on a monthly basis. There they will tread water, do physical training testing and study basic military knowledge.

Private Harvey, 17, was recently sworn in at MEPS in Salt Lake City for the National Guard. His decision to join the National Guard was due to the influence of his uncle who is in the Air Force and works with jets. His uncle assured him that he would be able to work on jets in the National Guard.

Another strong influence in his decision-making has been his friendship with three seniors who are also in the National Guard, Private First Class Sean Miller, Private First Class Adam Hanson and Private First Class Alex Brawley.

A recruiter for the National Guard has stated that he has never seen this unusual number of seniors at any high school in Wyoming join military service as this year at HSC High School.
