Blizzard of '49 presentation Saturday

During the winter of 1949 the death toll was 76, snow quickly became impassable and the bitter cold lasted for several months. On Saturday, Feb. 13, the Hot Spring Historical Society will present the PBS special “Storm of the Century: The Blizzard of ‘49”. The showing will start at 2 p.m. and is free to everyone.

On Jan. 2, 1949, Wyoming suffered one of the worst storms in recorded history. The first storm would be followed by two more months of snow and bitter cold. Eventually the National Weather Service would report the deaths of 12 people in Wyoming during first storm. The death toll continued to rise in western South Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska.

On March 1, after the federal government completed rescue operations, the death toll had reached 76 for the whole region while unofficial estimates calmed it was much higher.
