Firemen plan events for prevention week

Recognition of National Fire Prevention Week in Thermopolis was started many years ago by Barbra Moeller to educate children of the importance on how to react to a fire.

After Moeller retired, the Volunteer Fire Department continued local activities during National Fire Prevention Week. This year it runs from Oct. 4-10.

Reaching out to the public and going to the local schools to educate and teach important fire safety the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department will be going to Risen Son School, Mom and Tots, CRC, Hot Springs County Senior Center, Head Start and Northwest BOCES.

Ralph Witters Elementary students will ride the bus to the fire hall, except Kindergarten students who are scheduled to ride a fire truck. Children will receive a goody bag with a coloring book, crayons, stickers and a plastic fireman hat.

The theme this year is “Hear the beep where you sleep, every bedroom needs a smoke alarm.” Children will have the opportunity to practice escaping a smoke filled house. Injury Prevention from Riverton will have a blow up house with simulated smoke to practice on Monday, Sept. 5.

The firemen are also going to be delivering pizza and bring each house with a delivery order a new 9 volt battery for your smoke detector when you order a large pizza and wings from Pizza Hut on Thursday, Oct. 8 between 5-8 p.m.
