Golfers wrap up season with second place win

The Hot Springs County High School boys golf team finished their final meet of the season with a first place finish in their conference and a second place finish overall at the 2A Spring Championship.

"We took five boys and one girl to the 2A Spring Championship at the Casper Municipal Course," head coach Jacob Smith said. "The weather was a constant concern, with threats of thunder showers both days, especially Friday."

Yet despite the rain, the Thermopolis golfers were able to come out strong from the get-go.

"We started out right, with some great golf in the practice round," Smith said. "Two golfers set new personal bests (Caleb DeCroo- 82, Kristina Nading- 113)."

Kristina Nading was the only female athlete to compete, finishing the tournament with a fourth place conference win.

"Regardless of the threat of weather, the boys took a day one lead over the field with a great showing," Smith said. "Each player shot under their season average."

Following the great play on the first day, Smith said the team came back for another great performance on the second day of play.

"Day two proved to be a pretty amazing one. Jackson (Roling) shot an awesome 71, catching the attention of a college coach who came to watch." Smith said. "Caleb (DeCroo) had an amazing round, setting a new personal best that was 15 strokes under his season average with a 75."

However, even though Smith said the team played an excellent second day of golf they still fell short of the first place overall finish, just shy of Sundance Hulett for the Spring Championship boys team title.

"The boys team still won the Cowboy (South and West Region) Conference championship.  It was a great couple of days of golf," Smith said. "Every player brought home some hardware individually and the boys brought home a Conference Title."
