Honoring veterans

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

We thank America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Locally, there will be events to honor our veterans.

VFW Post 2281 will have a flag ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the post. Later that evening from 6-8 p.m., there will be a free dinner available to all veterans and their spouses.

The Thermopolis Middle School Student Council is hosting a Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 11 from 9-10 am at the school district’s auditorium. The assembly is being held to honor local veterans. The presentation will be held along with the Quilts of Valor ceremony. All Veterans are invited for coffee and donuts beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Plans are to place the Memorial Avenue of Flags at Monument Hill Cemetery. However, if there is a strong chance of rain, they cannot place the flags as many of them are irreplaceable.

Nationally, a number of special events are held to honor veterans around the country.

This year, Arlington National Cemetery will commemorate the 100th anniverary of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider on Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday so US Post Offices will be closed on Thursday. The Independent Record printed a day early so our subscribers could receive it in the mail on Wednesday.

Thank you to all veterans, near and far, for your invaluable service to your country and its citizens, past, present and future.
