On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

In the picture on page 6 of the Oct. 28 edition of the IR, Gavin Shumway was identified as his brother, Logan. We apologize for the error.

Monday, Oct. 25

3:23 p.m. Report of a suspicious subject at a local business that came inside and didn’t buy anything. The owner thought the subject was acting weird. After investigating, the deputy determined the call to be unfounded. 

Tuesday, Oct. 26

Unknown time: Carissa Mariah Funk, 23, of Worland, was placed in the Detention Center as a hold for Washakie County. 

3:39 p.m. Report of threatening via the Safe2Tell Wyoming program involving an anonymous call reporting bullying at school over alternative sexuality. The incident occurred on October 18. The sheriff’s office found that the school was dealing with the matter. 

Wednesday, Oct. 27

11:22 p.m. Report of a medical call involving a life assist of a 63-year-old female subject who had fallen. When the deputy entered the residence, they noticed the condition of the house. The subject refused an ambulance. However, the deputy reported the situation to the Department of Family Services for an unsafe environment. 

Thursday, Oct. 28

12:43 p.m. Report of a citizen assist involving an elderly female near King Road, Highway 20 North, who requested her daughter leave the property. The deputy spoke with an attorney as there was a power of attorney involved. It was determined the power of attorney was not in effect at the moment. The younger female subject agreed to leave. 

3:58 p.m. Report of found property of a pair of binoculars found at a pullout on Hospital Hill. No one yet has claimed them. They are being held in safekeeping. 

Friday, Oct. 29

7:45 p.m. Report of fire on top of Coyote Run. The Fire Department and deputies investigated using a drone. They were unable to locate any fire. 

8:43 p.m. Report of a medical call where a Title 25 subject was held in an involuntary commitment. The sheriff’s office is watching over the matter. 

Saturday, Oct. 30

12:37 p.m. Report of a possible drunk driver that was coming into town from the north.

The 56-year-old male subject pulled over first for the deputy and made consensual contact. The driver was not intoxicated, but had some physical disabilities.

The driver showed signs of impairment from a previous accident, but not to the point of unsafe driving. He was released, however his driver’s license will be reevaluated.

The driver was cited for duty upon collision with unattended property and improper lane use. 

5:56 p.m. Report of a structure fire near the mouth of Wind River Canyon. The deputy investigated and found it was a controlled burn in the Buffalo Creek area.

Police Department

Monday, Oct. 25

8:13 a.m. Report of an emergency involving a patient at the hospital where an officer stood by while the patient calmed down.

1:34 p.m. Report of lost property involving a set of keys.

1:54 p.m. Report of theft involving license plates stolen from a vehicle in the Canyon Hills Road area. There are no suspects.

4:18 p.m. A welfare check in the 400 block of Ryan Street. The officer arrived and did not find anyone but later learned the subject was with their spouse and was OK.

4:53 pm. Report of lost property involving some temporary tags that went missing between Thermopolis and Cody. 

5:40 p.m. An agency assist involving an officer who stood by while the Department of Family Services spoke with a family. 

Tuesday, Oct. 26

12:05 p.m. During a traffic stop at Grandview Street, a 19-year-old female driver was cited for unlawful possession of marijuana and failure to use a traffic signal. Also, a 19-year-old male passenger was cited for minor in possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana. 

3 p.m. Report of an accident in a parking lot of the 400 block of 6th street, the driver of a vehicle backed into another vehicle. The two drivers exchanged information, there were no citations. 

6:58 p.m. Report of a loud sound that was heard by residents in both Thermopolis and Kirby. Law enforcement does not know what it came from and it may have been a sonic boom.

Wednesday, Oct. 27

2:07 p.m. Report of theft involving items taken from a motel room while the tenant was gone. The matter is still under investigation. 

2:50 p.m. Report of a citizen assist where an officer accompanied a family member picking up a child from school.

11:13 p.m. Report of suspicious noise around the 600 block of Fremont. The homeowner heard loud banging. The officer arrived and found five deer in the yard. 

Friday, Oct. 29

11:44 a.m. A citizen assist were a subject notified law enforcement they were moving out by a certain date.

1:37 p.m. A citizen assist involving an unruly patient at the hospital. The officer stood by to help the patient calm down. 

5:53 p.m. A citizen assist involving an unruly patient at the hospital. The officer stood by a second time to help the patient calm down. 

Saturday, Oct. 30

9:25 a.m. A false fire alarm at a local restaurant. 

11:52 a.m. A citizen assist involving two roommates with one subject moving out. The other subject would not allow the moving-out-person to reenter. The other subject found another place to stay. 

2:04 p.m. Report of lost property involving a missing ID card. The owner is not sure where it was lost. 

4:20 p.m. Courtney Chenell Sears, 29, of Tucson, Arizona, was arrested for alleged driving while under the influence of alcohol, throwing a burning substance from a vehicle, failing to use a turning signal twice and driving without insurance. 

8:48 p.m. During a traffic stop, an officer saw a pipe in plain view inside the vehicle. An 18-year-old female was cited for possession of marijuana.

Birth

Bodie Leo Brown was born Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Powell Valley Healthcare to Julie Scott and Drew Brown.

He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 19.75 inches long.

Grandparents are Keith and Nancy Brown and Dorothea and James P. Scott.
