Unofficial primary election results

More than 1,600 Thermopolis and Hot Springs County residents came out to cast their ballots on Tuesday in the Primary Election and the unofficial results are in.

Of those, nearly 600 were absentee ballots, double what the county normally sees in an election year for President.

Starting with our local races, Dusty Lewis (574) and William H. Malloy (461) will be found on the general election ballot for Town Council in November. Brayden Harvey came in at 377 votes.

Jack Kuiper (49) and Bonnie Smith (50) will be on the ballot for the East Thermopolis Town Council.

In Kirby, Albera Hurley (12) and Tina L. Kealsing (12) will appear on the ballot for Town Council, while Jessica Slagle (16) will be on the ballot for Mayor of Kirby.

Phillip Scheel (843) will once again be on the ballot for County Commissioner. Scheel ran unopposed as Michael Liesch dropped out of the race but still received 415 votes.

Wyoming Senate District 20 will see Ed Cooper and Theresa Livingston facing off in November. Ed Cooper of Ten Sleep won the Republican nomination in a tightly fought race with Linda Weeks of Basin. Cooper received 2,300 votes to 2,084 for Weeks.

In House District 28, incumbent John Winter (1,126) will meet Levi Shinkle (150).

Votes for those vying for a seat in the United States Senate came down to two names in Hot Springs County -- Merav Ben David (81) and incumbent Cynthia Lummis (786).

In the race for United States Representative, Hot Springs County chose Liz Cheney (1,012) and Lynnette Grey Bull (104).

There is still time to get on the General Election Ballot for any of the openings in Thermopolis or Hot Springs County.

Potential candidates must have a petition, signed by 53 qualified voters, in the hands of the county clerk by Monday, August 24.

It is interesting to note that some races had quite a few “undervotes”, in other words those who were voting didn’t bother to choose anyone and left the circle blank.

The largest undervote count was in the race for Thermopolis Town Council where 368 voters did not cast a ballot for any of the three candidates on the ticket.
