On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Sheriff’s Office

Tuesday, Jan. 7

9:29 a.m. Report of a suspicious subject hanging out in a car at a resident’s driveway. Homeowner confronted subject face to face. The subject yelled about being kicked out of home and left. Subject was not identified and was not located.

Wednesday, Jan. 8

2:06 p.m. Report of alleged trespassing in East Thermopolis. Homeowner requested subject to leave the property and not to return.

Thursday, Jan. 9

10:02 a.m. Complaint of possible suspicious activity at a vacant business out of town. Deputy found a parked semi-truck with the driver taking a rest. The driver left the lot.

Friday, Jan. 10

3:11 p.m. Report of livestock on the highway. Deputy arrived and did not find the animals. Deputy will speak to owners as this is an ongoing issue.

Saturday, Jan. 11

3:03 p.m. Report of a semi-truck speeding on Hospital Hill on Highway 20 North. Deputy was unable to locate the vehicle.  

4:40 p.m. Report of a driver speeding in the 400 Block of Park Street and made an alleged inappropriate hand gesture. Deputy did not locate the vehicle. 

Sunday, Jan. 12

1:56 a.m. Report of car vs. deer wreck near mile marker 135 Highway 20 North.

10:11 a.m. Report of a two-vehicle head-on accident at mile marker 130 Highway 20 South with a car and semi-truck. Semi-truck was heading southbound and the vehicle swerved into its path. The matter is under investigation.

Monday, Jan. 13

9:19 p.m. Report of potential fraud as an elderly subject mistakenly gave away debit card info on the phone to an alleged scam. Subject canceled card, called the bank and no funds were lost. 

Police Department

Tuesday, Jan. 7

11:10 a.m. Report of an alleged nuisance problem at a residence and yard. Subjects cited to resolve the issue in municipal court.

6:06 p.m. Officer assisted ambulance with an elderly female for transport to the hospital.

 11:30 p.m. Reports of alleged harassment via text messages. Officer discussed the issue with the subjects.

Wednesday, Jan. 8

7:04 p.m. Report of inappropriate chalk drawing at 600 Block, South 6th street. 

Thursday, Jan. 9

9:24 p.m. Report of a citizen dispute involving two males fighting and throwing things.

Friday, Jan. 10

9:01 a.m. Report of a vehicle being driven over a construction company’s sheet metal covered in snow. No suspects identified. Tire tracks were not recoverable. 

9:15 a.m. Tom Maines, 66, was arrested and held for alleged probation and parole violation.

9:19 a.m. Officer assisted ambulance for transport of a subject to the hospital.

12:09 p.m. Report of the drivers of two vehicles running into each other in a parking lot. No citations issued.

3:01 p.m. Officer assisted ambulance in transport of a child to hospital. 

Saturday, Jan. 11

6 p.m. Subject pulled over for improper lighting on a trailer. Dustin Sebastian Janis, 26, of South Dakota was arrested on a warrant. He bonded out and was released.

9:43 p.m. Shawn Douglas Goodman Sr., 45, was arrested for alleged use and possession of a controlled substance.

Sunday, Jan. 12

5:06 p.m. Report of suspicious activities of subjects in their 20s checking out parked cars in the 200 block of north 6th Street.

6:14 p.m. Officer assisted ambulance for transport of an individual to the hospital.

6:59 p.m. Subject called for concern about others and domestic issues. One subject has not been contacted yet. The matter is under investigation.

Monday, Jan. 13

7:59 a.m. Report of speed limit sign knocked down.

11:26 a.m. Report of a musical instrument missing. The matter is under investigation.

3:21 p.m. Report of alleged fraud where a person received a letter claiming it’s from the US Post Office. Both Police and US Post Office said that it was not an official letter.

3:28 p.m. Report of an abandoned vehicle. Police tagged the vehicle and talked to the owner. If not moved within five days, it will be towed.

John E. Martinez Vargas, driving without a valid license, fees and fines $125. 

Desirae M. Gams, interfering with a peace officer, fees and fines $205 and leaving a vehicle unattended, 180 days jail, 176 days suspended, 1 year supervised probation, fees and fines $105. 

Mitchell A. Scruggs, driving without a valid driver’s license, fees and fines $135.

Patrick J. Forster, driving without a muffler, fees and fines $85.

Jacob Clemetson, driving without registration and improper display of tags, fees and fines $85.

Dakota L. Anderson, driving without a valid driver’s license, fees and fines $135.

Sean B. Randolph, driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license, fees and fines $455.

Darren J. Olson, breach of peace, fees and fines $100.

Ronald C. Lantz, failure to provide proof of liability insurance, fees and fines $245.

Jaylee Hood was born Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital to Julia Blakesley and Jared Hood.

She weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches long.

Grandparents are Mark, Lisa and Lori Blakesley and Rebecca and Aaron Brandwein.

Amari Hodge was born Monday, December 30, 2019, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital to Katie King and Chris Hodge.

She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long.

Rhett Williams was born Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital to Tess and Ryan Williams.

He weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 19 inches long.
