Some final words

For those of you who haven't heard yet, this will be my last official personal column at the Thermopolis Independent Record.

My wife and I made the decision earlier this month to return to our home state of Nebraska. It’s something we’ve been discussing for some time now, and things started falling into place in such a way that we knew we had to decide. In case you’re wondering, the choice was made based on being closer to family. Being four to six hours away makes it difficult for visits with grandparents, and it’s been affecting everyone more and more.

In looking ahead to the future, you can’t help but review the past and present, and reflect on how far you’ve come. I remember my first days at the Independent Record, fresh from the cornfields and flatlands, and not really knowing anyone in this wonderful land of mountains, canyons and hot springs. To say I was a bit high-strung would be an understatement.

But, as I learned the town and got to know the people that feeling faded. I can honestly say I’ve never felt more welcomed by a community in my life. The springs aren’t the only warm things here in Thermopolis, though both the springs and the welcoming attitude certainly helped make the transition easier.

And what an exciting time to be in Thermopolis. There’s been so much growth and change. Businesses have come and gone, or changed locations, the hospital is getting a new addition and our park facilities are being added to.

Of course, there are always two sides to change — this transition of mine, for example — and there always will be, but as I’ve stated before it’s important for any community to keep in mind that, no matter what your personal feelings are, change comes and it’s something to face together.

I truly have enjoyed my years in Thermopolis, watching the town change, cheering on the Bobcats, seeing my boys’ progress in the schools, and I still get a bit choked up thinking my time here is nearly up.

But I can guarantee this won’t be the last time you see me here. This town has grown near and dear to my heart, and I can’t wait for a return visit to see its progress. Be sure to keep that hot water on.
