Mary King

Longtime Thermopolis resident, Mary King, 92, passed away in Billings, Mont., Thursday, July 25, 2019.  She resided at her home in Thermopolis until a few days before her death.

Born September 30,1926, in the small coal mining town of Kleenburn, Wyo., she was the daughter of John and Anna (Wagner) Bury. Later, her family moved across the Big Horns to Kirby, then to Thermopolis in 1933. Mary graduated from Hot Springs County High School in 1944 and soon after went to work at the First National Bank (now Pinnacle Bank).

On September 6, 1952, she married Robert (Bob) King in Thermopolis. They resided in Grass Creek where Mary worked at the school as bookkeeper/secretary.

In 1963, the family moved to Thermopolis. Mary continued at Hot Springs County School District as cook, then bookkeeper, and finished her career at Hoffman Accounting. She continued to be an election judge at every election and recently volunteered at the Hot Springs County Museum.

An active member of St. Francis Church, she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society and the Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Women's Auxiliary for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hot Springs County Pioneer Association and Show and Tell Extension Club. She played an active role for decades in organizing and coordinating the Hot Springs County School reunions. 

Known for her contagious smile, Mary made friends wherever she went. She enjoyed helping others, clerking at auctions, collecting antiques, and spending time with family. Mary loved to travel and visited Rome, Spain, Canada, and nearly every state. The Black Hills were especially dear to her.

She is survived by her five children, Tina (Terry) Wiley of Rawlins, Lyle (Shelly) King of Basin, Barbara (Pat) Long of Meeteetse, Martin (Peggy) King of Buena Vista, Colo., and Dean (Jackie) King of Thermopolis; sister, Dolly Daniels; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Joseph Bury, John Bury, Jr., and Hank Bury; sisters, Betty Shaffer, Patty Andreen, and Frances Smith; grandsons, Patrick Wiley and Matthew Long.  

Rosary will be Fri., August 9 at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat., August 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Church with Father Randy Oswald officiating. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Cemetery. A luncheon provided by the Council of Catholic Women will be at noon. Public is invited.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mary King Memorial at the Hot Springs County Museum, 700 Broadway, Thermopolis, WY, 82443.
