During the July 30 meeting of the local chapter of Rotary International, District Governor Chris Woodruff and his wife Karoline joined more than 20 board members for a meeting before their regular meeting.
Chris first spoke about his background as an assessor for many years, among other things, and told them he joined Greeley’s Greeley Centennial Club in 2000.
He wears many hats, both in Rotary and in other areas. Since he joined in 2000, Chris has held many positions in the club, including six years as Club Secretary, Club President and Foundation Chair. At the district level, he has served on the Foundation Committee, chaired the Awards Committee and served for four years as the Assistant Governor for the Estes Park clubs. He has served as a Visioning facilitator and has presented at District Assemblies. He also helped lead training for president-elect nominees.
Chris and his wife — also a Rotarian — visited this area for the first time and enjoyed it. They had already soaked in the hot springs and visited the buffalo pasture before the meeting with the board. He shared accolades to Shurie Scheel as a District Governor nominee and gave the club high marks for involvement in so many projects.
Chris also spoke about Rotary International’s new vision statement — “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves” — and five-year strategic plan. He further spoke to Rotary’s core values of Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership, and encouraged the board members to think about how membership in Rotary has affected each of them. He also asked them to look at new needs and to challenge themselves.
Karoline spoke about a Dig Deep District 5440 Partner Project she is heading. The idea of bringing clean water to members of the Navajo Nation came from a woman in California and there is a Rotary Global Grant for it. The project is now in Phase 3 and will improve water for more than 300 Navajo homes. She passed a water bottle for donations and the board learned later that they, as a club, are very generous.
Chris spoke about upcoming events such as the District Assembly on October 5, the District Conference in Greeley at the end of May 2020, and the Rotary International conference in Hawaii in early June 2020. He, in consultation with the local board, awarded a Rotary Geek award to member Travis Winger and a Rotary Fun Meter to member Al Braaten.
Chris and Karoline also joined the club in the evening at the branding of the turtles — numbering them for the Turbo Turtle Trek — at Red Ranch Retreat. He will be busy visiting other chapters around the state.
District 5440 includes all of Wyoming, northern Colorado, and parts of western Nebraska and eastern Idaho.
