Speechsters second at state

The Bobcat Speech and Debate team was quite successful at their State Tournament in Riverton last weekend, bringing home second place in 1A-2A as well as having a number of students named to the All State team.

After three days of competition, Tyler Kay and Kyle Mosser made it to the final round of dramatic interpretation with Kay taking 8th place and Mosser coming in 6th.

Mosser was a double winner, bringing home 5th with his poetry as well.

On the debate side of things, Breeze Petty fought her way through octa-finals to grab the 5th place spot in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

"I cannot express how proud I am of this little team" coach Cindy Glasson said. "They have been superior contenders this entire season and have given the entire state a run for its money.

"Our state tournament is exhausting for these kids. They perform literally three days in a row for 12 hours at a time and have the stamina to bring home second place and a good roster of All Staters."

Along with their second place finish, the Cats added several names to the All State list for 2019. In order to qualify for All State in your division, speakers must finish in the top three for points.

In humor, Lane Randall, Katie Burrows and Ashley Brawley swept the All State list, finishing first, second and third, respectively.

Mosser placed second in both drama and poetry for All State.

In duet, Brawley and her partner Kris Lahoe filled the third place All State spot.

Hannah Hu, who has been excelling in informative all season garnered the third place slot for All State.

Bobcat LD debaters, Breeze Petty and Jean-Luc Willson topped the All State list with first and third, respectively.

The State Tournament is usually the culminating event for sports and other activities, however, with speech they still have one more major tournament to get through, the National Qualifying Tournament.

National Qualifiers determines who will be attending the National Tournament in Dallas, Texas in June. The top three finishers in each event get to attend the prestigious tournament that includes students from across the nation and several foreign countries.

"This is like the NFR for speakers," Glasson laughed. "If we have kids who qualify, this will be the 17th appearance for our school at the National Tournament. Honestly, we have several kids that are definite contenders for Dallas."

The team began performing this morning (Thursday) at the tournament which will last through Saturday.
