Freshman see another win

The freshman Bobcats took another road win Dec. 21, coming out 61-58 against Fort Washakie.

Coach Dean Despain stated, “We played the high school basketball team for Fort Washakie; they don’t have a Varsity designation yet, so we played their entire team — Freshmen through Seniors — with our Froshmore Squad.

The Fort Washakie team started hot, hitting their first two three-pointers and a couple bunnies, and jumped out to a 10-0 lead. We trailed for most of the game by right around 10 points, with them getting ahead as many as 16 in the second and third quarter. We stayed disciplined and played within our offense and in the fourth quarter we really took off, came back from 8-10 points down and ended up winning by three.

“We had solid performances by our starters and our bench, but it was overall a team effort with good leadership, good composure, and great discipline to remain focused on our game plan and to execute it down the stretch. Once again our defense was stout, we held all but their best scorer to less than 10 points. Their best scorer, a junior, did have 34 points against us, we simply didn’t have an answer for him for most of the game.

“We are developing leadership and poise in close games, the boys continue to grow and mature as the season progresses and it is showing in their style of play, they could have easily gotten discouraged against an older, more physically mature, hot shooting team, but they didn’t, they trusted one another to do their jobs and in the end came out on top of a very fun and exciting game.”

The freshman team will be on the road again this Saturday, Jan. 5 at Buffalo, while the Varsity and JV teams are hitting the East/West Classic at Rawlins Jan. 4 and 5.
