Lady Cats take down Newcastle

The Lady Bobcat volleyball team had their first conference match-up of the season last Friday against Newcastle at home.

Coach Shannon Hill said the girls came out ready to play that night, started out leading and kept it that way the entire match.

"I was really proud of the girls for keeping their intensity and not letting down, even in game three," Hill said. "We really focused on consistency in practice last week and our girls followed through and played the way they know how."

The Lady Cats took Newcastle down, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-15.

Ashley McPhie led the team with 14 kills and four aces, followed by Kelly Johnson with six kills and 12 digs.

Sesi Jensen added up eight aces along with five kills and an additional 12 digs. Tatum Vialpando added three blocks to her stats.

The team traveled to Douglas the next day, Saturday, and it was a completely different story.

"Douglas is a very good team that runs a fast offense," Hill said.

They had spent the week in practice focusing on getting a win against a team like Newcastle and Hill said they just weren't prepared to play Douglas.

"We came out looking quite intimidated and didn't adjust well to their level of play," she said.

Jensen had three kills on Saturday against the Bearcats. McPhie added eight digs to her record while Vialpando tipped off four blocks.

Final scores against Douglas were 8-25, 7-25 and 8-25.
