The old joke about the best three things about being a teacher – June, July and August – is pretty outdated these days. No longer do teachers take the summer off, only to return to their classrooms a week or two before classes start to decorate the bulletin boards and make seating charts.
These days, teachers spend their time facilitating the summer Lights On programs, providing summer school instruction, working in their classrooms, collaborating with their grade level and content team members and so much more, all unpaid.
They are making sure they are well prepared for the upcoming year so students get the best education possible, but some are also taking their own college courses and working on their National Board Certifications.
Teachers spend a good portion of their ‘summer vacation’ reviewing student assessments, working together to establish content area vertical alignment so students can move from grade to grade without too much review time and working with Wyoming Performance Standards in order to build common outcome assessments.
On top of all of that, coaches have an extra assignment along with their assistants and volunteer coaches to host open gym times, work with athletes in the weight room, go to camps and get their teams ready for the season.
Of course, they’re still decorating their classrooms, finding those inspirational posters, moving desks and tables around and making name tags. They’re buying books and supplies, extra kleenex and plenty of disinfecting wipes, too, all to get ready for the 2018-2019 school year.
Kudos to these often underappreciated teachers who dedicate so much of their lives to ensuring every child in Hot Springs County gets the best possible education.
