It seems that more and more political signs continue to pop up all over town, supporting one candidate or another for local, state or federal offices. But though the lawn decorations have been going up since candidates announced they are running, the past couple weeks have seen incidence of signs being marred or even yanked out of yards and placed in dumpsters.

While hoping everyone shares your opinion, no matter the topic, is something of pipe dream, it doesn’t have to get to the point where vandalism or worse crimes come into play. Not only does it not help to convert others to your way of thinking, but we live in a small town where everyone is looking out for theirs, and more often then not, their neighbors as well.

That means if you want to tramp through a yard and rip out a sign by its stakes or get into a fist fight over who would be better for office, someone’s going to be paying attention and you could get more than you wanted with a citation or a fine.

It’s understandable that, as the primary election gets closer, things are going to get more heated. Candidates are going to get more enthusiastic with their campaigns, just as voters are going to get more passionate in their reasons to vote for one another. As we’ve stated many times before, one of the best ways to be a responsible voter is to get out there at the various “meet and greets” and public forums, shake hands with these men and women, get to know all of them and bring up any questions or concerns you have.

Don’t just support your one candidate and decide everyone else deserves their signs knocked down or marked up. The election will ultimately decide who will win the seats, and even if your choice doesn’t make the cut it’s not worth the price you coul pay.
