Take advantage of the opportunities

Thermopolis was recently designated as an “opportunity zone.” In essence, this means people – whether they live here or not – can invest money from the sale of companies into our community if they so choose.

True, to be designated an opportunity zone it does mean our community is in something of an economic “low spot.” That is an unfortunate reality, but rather than making that a focus point let’s instead concentrate on the word “opportunity.” There are plenty in Thermopolis if you take the time to seek them out.

We often focus on the negative because it can be easier to tear someone or something down rather than make the effort to get involved. When a big event is happening in town, such as last weekend’s three-on-three tournament or the annual PRCA Rodeo, Hot Spot Car Rally or Demolition Derby, it’s easy for some to complain about the loud music, excited crowds and roaring engines. Instead of just venting frustration, vocally or more commonly through social media, why not check out the events or see how you can help. You might just find that your cause for complaint can turn into a fun time.

While there is plenty going on in town year-round, it’s also a fact that a lot of the events are organized by many of the same people. This doesn’t mean the events have to stay the same every year, or that we can’t add to what’s happening. Take it as another opportunity. If you’d like to see something different for an event – or bring something new to the table – stop by a meeting of the town council, chamber of commerce, county commission, hospital board or any of the other organizations for the town and/or county. Just because we’re in an election year doesn’t mean you have to submit your name for any of the elected positions; most board meetings are public, and comments are encouraged.

With all that we have going on in Thermopolis, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved, not just to complain or critique but to make some positive change in our town and our lives. Don’t wait for it to knock, get out there and find it yourself.
