Lady Cats get confidence booster from win

The Lady Cats JV and froshmore teams both traveled over the weekend, playing Wheatland on Friday before taking on Torrington on Saturday.

Friday’s game against Wheatland’s Lady Bulldogs was a real confidence booster for the froshmore team as they came out on top, 62-30.

Coach Katie Despain said the first quarter was tight, with the girls just three points ahead, but they came out in the second quarter ready to play and went to the locker room at halftime, 40-19.

“They played hard and communicated as a team well,” she said. “I was very pleased with their ball movement throughout the game. Overall, it was a nice win on the road.”

Reagan Severance led the team with 13 points, followed by Elisa Weber’s 11 points and Emme Norsworthy’s 10.

Rounding out the scoring was Jasmine Collins, Jazmen Jensen and Bri DeVries, each with eight points and Dayna Sandberg and Audrey Axtell with two points each.

Things were a bit rough for the JV team, however, losing to Wheatland 42-19.

The girls scored just four points in the entire first half of the game.

They were able to jump back in and outscore them in the third quarter, 8-5, but they just could not get shots to fall. Free-throw shooting was another killer, with only 26% at the line.

“I feel like if the girls would have come out ready to play they could have been in the game a lot more,” Despain said. “Too many errors dug us into too big of a hole.”

Norsworthy and Elisa Weber led the team with five points each with Axtell and Hailie Weber right behind with three points each.

Bri DeVries dropped in two and Kaylee DeVries had a single point from the free-throw line.

Saturday’s froshmore game against the Lady Trailblazers from Torrington was tight all the way with the Lady Cats losing by just five, 41-36.

At the end of the first quarter, the girls were down just 13-9, then 22-18 in the second.

The Cats would get close to tying up the game and Torrington would bounce back.

“Torrington had a tough press that they put on the whole game,” Despain said. “The girls were able to overcome th press the majority of the game, but they were still able to get a couple turnovers on the press from us.”

The girls played hard the second half and only shot one less point than Torrington in those quarters.

Despain said it was “good to see the girls play another aggressive game.”

Severance again led the team scoring with 10.

Elisa Weber posted six points and Collins five with Norsworthy, Axtell and Sanberg each dropping in four. Jazmine Jensen scored three for the Cats.

It was a rough day for the JV team, losing to the Trailblazers, 38-25 on Saturday.

The first half was particularly hard with the Lady Cats scoring just eight points to Torrington’s 29.

“We were able to come out in the thrid and fourth quater and outscore them both,” Despain said. “We shot 11 points to their six in the third and six in the fourth to their three.

“The girls came out a lot more aggressive the last half. I am proud of them for not giving up and making Torrington work for the win.”

Severance was the top scorer this game, too, with eight points, Dani Jo Pebbles added six more and Elisa Weber had four. Norsworthy and Aspen Jensen each had two points to add to Collins’ three.
