Golfers headed to state championship

The Bobcat golf team made the journey to Wheatland last week to attend the 3A East Conference.

Coach Jacob Smith said the golf course was in great condition and the team was really looking forward to a good weekend of competition.

Things started out well the first day with Hudson Roling, returning 3A State Champion, spending the first nine holes getting a feel for the course and shooting just two over par.

His second trip around Wheatland’s nine holes showed what kind of golfer Roling is with him shooting a four under par 32, ending day one with a 70, which is two under par, leading the entire field by 11 strokes.

Cade McLean couldn’t quite get his game where he wanted it on the first day, but he still shot a 94.

“Cade is a solid young golfer who shows a ton of promise,” Smith said. “A bad day being in the mid 90’s is a huge improvement over last spring when a bad round for him was around 115.

“This is huge growth and I can’t wait to see how he grows this year.”

Jeffry Clark had a fantastic first day, shooting an 89 in his first conference tournament. Kyle Roessing and Clemens Abbot both played well also, with ups and downs, finishing the day at 134 and 116 respectively.

Madeline Stam, the only Lady Cat golfer, blew her previous tournament personal record out of the water, improving from last week by an incredible 24 strokes, posting a 123.

The second day was a bit of a struggle for most, as they began to feel the pressure of improving on their day one scores.

Roling attacked the second day much like the first.

He was even on the front nine and two under par on the back nine to finish the tournament with a total score of 140 (70-70) and clinch a second conference championship.

The rest of the team struggled a bit with only Abbot able to improve, shooting a tournament personal record of 108.

“All in all, I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the progress they have made,” Smith said. “We are eager to improve more at State this week in Douglas.”
