Suicide prevention walkers coming through town

Terresa Humphries-Wadsworth has been training for some time now in preparation for her long trek across Wyoming to raise awareness and support for Suicide Prevention.

Beginning in Cody tomorrow, Sept. 1, she will begin her 15-day journey to Cheyenne to raise awareness that struggle is part of the human condition and you don’t have to do it alone.

And Humphries-Wadsworth won’t be doing it alone.

When she told her friend Kelly Eckerdt about her plan last year, Eckerdt jumped right in, telling her she was going with her.

Humphries-Wadsworth works as director of suicide prevention in Wyoming, and Eckerdt, from Powell, is a suicide prevention support specialist.

The women will be walking over 400 miles during the 15 days, making stops along the way. A personal trainer donated her time to the women to get them prepared for the trip.

The ladies will start in Cody tomorrow, walking to Meeteetse by Saturday. They will walk from there to the Grass Creek exit near Thermopolis on Sun., Sept. 3, then make their way into Thermopolis for Labor Day, Sept. 4. Then its off to Shoshoni, Moneta, Powder River, Vista West south of Casper on I-25, followed by Glenrock, Douglas, Glendo, Wheatland, Chugwater and finally Cheyenne by Sept. 15.

“Its amazing how others are supporting this journey through donating water, gas funds and hotel stays,” said Humphries-Wadsworth. “I couldn’t do this without my Wyoming community’s support.”

If you or a loved one, friend or family member has lost someone to suicide, you may go to their website and place their name on a list. Those names will then become “In Honor Of” miles, with that mile being walked in your loved one’s name.

The walk schedule can be viewed at walkacrosswy.com and walkacrosswy.com/in-honor-of.
