Trek with the turtles

There are still some tickets available for the 12th annual Great American Turbo Turtle Trek on Saturday, Aug. 26. The event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., at the Big Spring outlet stream.

The trek is the main fundraiser for the local Rotary, which uses the money for projects such as scholarships, handicap accessible swings in Hot Springs State Park, helping with Christmas baskets and donating to building an outhouse at the 4-H camp. The local club has also sent Rotarians to Kenya to help with the clean water project.

The turtle trek begins when numbered plastic turtles are dumped into the outlet stream. As they cross the finish line, they are taken out and the winning numbers are announced. Prizes include cash, trips, gift certificates and many other items.

Tickets are still available at Thermopolis Hardware and Tumbleweed Propane, according to Sharon Skiver.
