Groups planning trek to Blonde Pass

The Hot Springs County Historical Society and Pioneer Association will host a trek to Blonde Pass on Saturday, July 29. The event is open to members only.

Those who want to go on the trip should meet at Hot Springs County Museum at 8:45 a.m.

The trek requires four-wheel drive vehicles, and follows an old stage road over Blonde/Merritt Pass through the Owl Creek Mountain. At one time, it was the main road from the south into the Bighorn Basin from Fort Washakie to Red Lodge, Mont., though it is now on the Wind River Indian Reservation and closed to the general public. Through the efforts of Joe Armejo and Mike Chimenti, permission was granted to travel along the unique historical byway.

Travelers should bring, in addition to a four-wheel drive vehicle, lunch and water, a folding chair for eating lunch, bug spray, sunscreen, a hat and a jacket.

Though the trip is open only to members of the Hot Springs County Historical Society and Pioneer Association, people can join either group for $5. For more information, call Barb Vietti at 921-1551 or Ray Shaffer at 864-2678.
