The Bobcat Robotics recently competed at the Montana State FTC Competition. Two teams competed — Aluminati, coached by London Jenks, and Fist Full of Axles, coached by Curtis Hamer. There were 36 total teams competing, and computer science teacher Steve Radabaugh stated Aluminati ended up seated 15th and Fist Full of Axles was seated 19th.
Radabaugh is happy with how well both teams performed, as the competition in Montana is very stiff. He explained teams are randomly placed into qualifying matches, with each team in five matches. Each match consists of four robots, two on each alliance. Teams have random partners, so they might work with someone one round and against them in a future round.
Each team on the winning alliance gets two qualifying points, and a tie gets one qualifying point. The score of the losing alliance goes to all four teams as ranking points.
Seeding is determined first on number of qualifying points and second on number of ranking points. A team that goes undefeated for the day will have 10 qualifying points. Both of the Thermopolis teams had six qualifying points.
Radabaugh further stated the scoring method means teams want to score a lot of points, but win by a narrow margin. It reinforces collaboration between teams and gracious professionalism.
The Robotics teams will host the T-Town Throwdown which will function as both a scrimmage and a community day for local people come see what they do.
The event will be Feb. 11 at the middle school.
Matches will start about 11 a.m. and last for a few hours. The following weekend they are headed to Casper for the Wyoming State Championship at CY Middle School.
