Hometown Holiday kicks off Nov. 26

When the turkey is down to nothing but sandwiches, it’s a good time to get started — or continue — with some holiday shopping. The Hometown Holiday event kicks of on Nov. 26, with many stores opening for early shopping at 8 a.m. as part of the Shop Small campaign. People can also take a “selfie” at participating businesses or participate in a scavenger hunt. A list of participating businesses will be at an information table at Storyteller.

The Storyteller is also home to the Elf Tree. Those who want to participate in the tree activity can stop by and select an elf, which will have on it a specific gender, age and other relevant information. People can then purchase a gift based on that information, and help make the holidays a bit brighter for someone.

When the shopping’s done, it’s time for the rest of the festivities, beginning at 6 p.m. at Bi-Centennial Park. The lights will be lit, and stores are encouraged to turn their lights on. Bi-Centennial Park will also be home to the first drawing of the 21 Days of Christmas, for $200 in Chamber Bucks. Tickets for the drawing are obtainable through purchases at local businesses, and ticketholders must be present to win. Drawings will also be on Dec. 3 for $300 in Chamber Bucks, and on Dec. 10 for $500 in Chamber Bucks.

The evening will also see the crowning of the Snow King and Queen, selected from the high school, and a demonstration from the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department, who will show how quickly a Christmas tree can ignite and cause a house fire. Following the demonstration, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to greet children at Hazel-n-Pearl’s.

Residents are encouraged to make a day of it on Nov. 26, shopping locally and enjoying the hometown holidays.
