Monday afternoon in Hot Springs District Court, Kimberly Sams was sentenced to a total 7-13 years at the Wyoming Women’s Center on charges from two cases. Sams entered a plea agreement earlier this year, in which she would plead guilty to five felony counts of misrepresentation for public welfare benefits occurring between Oct. 1, 2012, and May 21, 2015. According to a report released last month by the Economic Analysis Division of the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information, Hot Springs County was among the six counties in the state to see a decrease in taxable sales, coming in at 5.9 percent less for the second quarter in 2019 compared to the second quarter of 2018. The previous years saw a 12.3 percent increase, and information provided in the report is based on sales and use tax collections. Taking the state as a whole, taxable sales grew 7.8 percent. A house located on Highway 20, just over the county line between Hot Springs and Washakie counties, caught fire Monday around noon. Members of the Thermopolis Fire Department assisted the Worland Fire Department in extinguishing the fire. Earlier this month, High Plains Power came to the rescue of an osprey entangled in twine, hanging from a platform nest north of Thermopolis. A landowner initially reported the incident to Thermopolis Game Warden Benge Brown, who reached out to the electric utility company for assistance. Ramsey Allen with High Plains Power used the bucket of a utility truck to free the bird and hand him off to Brown. Monday in Hot Springs District Court, Adam Maggos and Michael Guzman pleaded not guilty to charges against them stemming from two different drug busts. Guzman is charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of meth with intent to deliver and conspiracy to deliver meth. I wish to express my condolences to the family of Ruth Clare Yonkee. For the 54 years we lived in Thermopolis, Ruth Clare was my dearest and best friend. I visited her many times in her home and later was a steady visitor to her at the rehabilitation center — until we moved to Laramie. We corresponded regularly and shared occasional phone calls. Donald Paul Weeks, 77, was born in Rock Springs, Wyo. For much of his life he worked in the oil fields becoming a production foreman. In 1966 he married Karen Leger. The couple lived in Bairoil until 1997 when they moved to Basin. Don loved music, and was a member of the “Heaven Bound Band” in Basin. The annual Hot Springs Sheriff’s Office Pumpkin Patch will be Oct. 18 and 19 outside the doors of the Joint Law Enforcement Center in the 400 block of Arapahoe. Cross country runners took on a new type of event with the Cody Foxes and Hounds last Friday, though weather conditions were certainly less than ideal.
