Early this summer the students involved in the Youth Alternatives Program along with local citizens, went out on East River Road and cleaned up tons of trash, televisions, furniture and all manner of "targets" from an area known as TV Draw. At Tuesday's County Commissioners' meeting, Youth Alternatives director Barb Rice said people are already back out there filling it up again. She suggested some signage about "No Dumping" might need to be put up in the area. The land in question is actually... Full story

  • Mayor explains water well project concerns

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Sep 6, 2018

Water has been on a lot of people’s minds lately, with plenty of discussion in and outside of meetings of the Thermopolis Town Council. The Hot Springs County Rural Water Joint Powers Board has been a strong proponent for drilling a new well at Lysite Mountain in order to tap the groundwater there, and has presented a case that indicates there would be lower water rates and better tasting water for board members. Most recently the joint powers board – consisting of the districts of Owl Cre...

  • No parking

    Lara Love, Publisher|Sep 6, 2018

For at least the third time this summer, law enforcement responded to a vehicle parking in a traffic lane on Broadway. As heat and wear can cause the lane dividing lines to fade, certain parts of the street can appear to be one-lane with ample room for parking. However, drivers are reminded that downtown Broadway parking is only in areas designated by the diagonal yellow lines in the 500 block, and by diagonal lines along the curb or the lines in the middle of the street in the 400 and 300...

  • Placemaking Thermopolis

    Cindy Glasson|Sep 6, 2018

We’ve been hearing a lot lately from Main Street Thermopolis and the Chamber of Commerce about something called “Placemaking,” but what is it, really? Placemaking is the idea of reimagining and reinventing public spaces as the heart of the community. Its a way for folks in town to work collaboratively toward defining the town’s identity. Actually, its not a new idea. While it gained ground in the mid-90s, it really started in the 60s with the focus on designing cities around people, not just par...

  • Bath house closing for repairs

    Sep 6, 2018

Those looking to take in a soak at the Hot Springs State Park Bath House next week will have to wait, as the building will be closed for construction Sept. 10-14. Park Superintendent Kevin Skates said the entire HVAC system needs replaced and workers will have to be in the roof and in the locker rooms, so closing the building is much simpler than trying to have the work done around visitors. Skates noted it has been at least 20 years since the system needed replacing, and the mineral air at the bath house can be awfully hard on electrical...

  • A sigh of relief

    Sep 6, 2018

The newspaper industry let out a huge sigh of relief this past week as the U.S. International Trade Commission overturned an administrative decision imposing tariffs on Canadian newsprint that went into effect in January. That tariff could have ultimately caused newspapers across the country to raise their prices by nearly double or create layoffs of reporters, photographers and other staff to make up for the cost. Small, weekly newspapers such as ourselves, would have felt the pinch, possibly to the point of putting us out of business....

  • Remembering to stand together

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Sep 6, 2018

Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of one of the most horrific attacks on U.S. soil, a day that will forever stir memories and emotions when someone mentions the date — 9/11. It’s weird to think that many of our high school upperclassmen weren’t even born when the news came over of the planes striking the two towers of the World Trade Center, only learning of it through textbooks and what their parents have told them. Though a time of extreme fear for our country, it was also a period when we ca...

  • The measure of a man

    Rex Clothier|Sep 6, 2018

A poem I once read and taught from spoke to the heart about a trip by the poet to the home of his youth. In it he spoke of how much smaller than his memories were the realities of the mountains, now barely hills, the river, now barely a creek, and the schools which seemed so large as he started his education, and now seemed so small as he returned from the city in which his life now unfolded. In celebration of last Memorial Day, my spouse and I drove to Torrington to visit Mom and Dad’s grave. I think of my parents often, and their r...

  • Hospital gains easy access to life flight

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Sep 6, 2018

Staff at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital will have a smoother time calling for life flight services with the hospital’s new “easy button.” Hospital CEO Margie Molitor explained the button allows emergency room staff to immediately call the Wyoming Medical Center life flight service. She noted the service can transport people anywhere, not just back to the Wyoming Medical Center. Another advantage, she noted, is staff from Casper can transport blood as well, if necessary. The button, she s...

  • Golfers hosting tournament

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Sep 6, 2018

The Bobcat golf team went over the mountain last Thursday for the Buffalo Invitational Golf Tourney. Coach Joey Johnson said the Buffalo course is the hardest the team has played so far this year and their first day scores reflected that. Trees were an issue for the Cats on the Buffalo course, the greens ran very fast and were hard to reach, proving a challenge to the young team. Day one scores were Hardy Johnson, 74; Jeffry Clark, 101; Lee Grimm, 140; Kyle Roessing, 110; Will Clark, 133 and...

Though the offense still wasn’t able to put some points on the board, McPhie said the boys played both sides of the ball better, allowing only a couple more scores the remaining three quarters. Both the offense and defense got settled into the game after that f...

We started to play as a team and our defense picked up immensely. "We still need...
