  • WYDOT reports on canyon walls

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 3, 2017

The rock slides in Wind River Canyon this spring and into part of summer are one of the top priorities for the Wyoming Department of Transportation according to the state director, Bill Panos, who met with the county commissioners on Tuesday. Panos said this was the first year they had brought in the state’s geology department to take a look at the canyon walls, even before the slides started happening, to get a better idea of where they may occur. Fortunately, they were already in the area w...

Council heard from Michelle Lue, who noted the ArtStroll has already been rescheduled for the same weekend and there’s expected to be an influx of people, and allowing vendors to set up in the park could help to draw them downtown. Jerry Fields added they’re not looking to charge anyone, but they want to invite people to come down and set up. Deb...

A motion for a new trial in a case against Justin Spence was denied Monday in Hot Springs District Court. Spence was found guilty of incest on April 27, following a three-day trial. According to the charge, he molested a juvenile female on July 4 or 5, 2014. A motion for a new trial was filed in early May, and prosecuting attorney Marcia Bean noted the hearing on the motion was not within the allowed timeframe — 15 days from the motion filing and 60 days from the conviction —so it would be aut... Full story

  • Record year for Boysen

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 3, 2017

By now, most everyone understands that Boysen Reservoir and the Wind and Big Horn Rivers were full and fast for the past two months. Several river rescues were required during that time, ruining the chance of floating the river for most. What we didn’t realize at the time, however, was the water flows this summer have broken a 50-year old record. The record was first set in 1967 when 1.3 million acre feet of water flowed into the reservoir. As of Wed., July 26, 1.67 million acre feet flowed i...

  • Put your best foot forward

    Aug 3, 2017

Growing up we were always told to “put your best foot forward.” Today’s generation hears “dress for the job you want.” Both phrases should be on our minds as we prepare for the influx of visitors coming to Hot Springs County in about three weeks. If these visitors have a great time in Thermopolis while they’re here, chances are they will return and of course, will be telling their friends about this great little town in the middle of Wyoming. With that in mind, it would be a good time to start putting our best foot forward. Let’s get out there...

  • It's the little things

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Aug 3, 2017

Last weekend I took the opportunity to do something I haven’t in . . . I can’t remember when. I fished. At a small lake about 10 miles from my in-laws I was re-acquainted with that age-old pass time that comes with the cycle of casting, untangling, getting frustrated, occasionally taking a poke from the hook and, yes, even catching a small crappie, bluegill or bass every so often. While I seem to remember drinking was a part of that process the last time with a rod and reel in my hand, I tho...

  • Do words count?

    Rex Clothier|Aug 3, 2017

If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it repeatedly; words count. As a retired English and writing teacher, I’ve lost track of the times I’ve used that phrase or one that was similar in meaning. I emphasized making the words convey as accurately as possible content when you wanted the hearer or reader to understand your meaning or feeling. In a public setting, there were ways of conveying your emotions that were not acceptable, and those that were. People were scandalized by the recorded words of a former president copied from tapes made that wer...

  • Intrigued by martial law concept

    Mike Pierce|Aug 3, 2017

I am intrigued by Hanes W. Hall’s letter, putting forth the concept of the possibility of the imposition of “martial law” by the president. Seems to be another unfounded (and confounding as well) conspiracy theory from a particular political party. Only the current president could impose a national system of “martial law.” I personally have heard nothing - zero, zip, nada - about the president even remotely considering such an action. And I’m curious, why would the president want to do that in the first place? For no reason that I can think o...

  • What is economic development?

    Amanda Moeller|Aug 3, 2017

Several times a month someone asks me what economic development is, or does. While economic development is unique to each community, there are basic building blocks intended to create a continual cycle of development. The Wyoming Economic Development Association has produced a series of “building blocks” to guide communities in Wyoming. Each level provides a foundation for the next. Most economic developers work on developing all tiers simultaneously. The first level of the building blocks is Leadership/Civic Development & the role of pub...
