The Hot Springs County Board of Commissioners held their first meeting for March on Tuesday, discussing election items, road and bridge work and fuel and holding tank issues with the airport. Hot Springs Greater Learning Foundation was awarded the prestigious Wyoming Governor's Arts Award during an awards ceremony Friday evening in Cheyenne. Thermopolis Middle School eighth grader Katie Burrows returned home from the Showalter Music Festival held Feb. 13 at Northwest College not knowing she had won a prestigious award for her vocal solo performance. Over 500 vocal soloists performed at the competition and Burrows was name the most Outstanding Musician 2016. She scored 24 out of a possible 25 points. Gavin Philips, a Hot Springs County High School graduate in 2001, has been hired by the Johns Hopkins Medical Center’s Institute for Cell Engineering to join an international team of doctors developing a new form of brain scan. The project is partially funded by President Obama’s Brain Initiative. According to Philips, the new scan involves inserting nano-particles into blood cells and tracking them with electromagnets. Matilda Opal Schaff, 95, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016, at the Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Care Center. Born in 1921 in Havelock, N. D., she was the 12th of 16 children born to Raphael and Rose (Hegal) Daum who had immigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine, Russia. At the age of six the farming family moved to Edgar, Mont., where they worked sugar beets in the Fromberg, Silicia and Edgar area. In 1939 Matilda married Victor George Schaff in Bowman, N.D. Fred Ernest Holdrege, Jr., 98, of Ellicott City, Md., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, from complications resulting from a fall. Fred was born in Thermopolis on Sept. 3, 1917, and lived in Durham for 40 years before moving to Maryland. Jared Wayne Holloway, 34, of Shoshoni, died at his home on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016. Jared was born Nov. 29, 1981, to Jack and Diane (Smith) Holloway. He grew up in Oklahoma and moved to Wyoming with his family in 2003. He worked odd jobs until he started his trucking career, which he loved. Beatrice "Bea" Seaver, 92, died Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Worland Healthcare and Rehab Center. Born August 2, 1922, in Muskogee, Okla., she was the daughter of Hugh and Ellen (Stubblefield) Hall. Hot Springs County saw a 8.6 percent decrease in total payroll and a decrease of 90 fewer in monthly employment between the second quarter of 2014 and the second quarter of 2015, according to data released last month by the research and planning division of the state Department of Workforce Services.
