Speak up

The political races are set and the primary election is coming up on August 21. Next Monday, voters will have the opportunity to bring forth their questions and concerns during the candidate forum at Thermopolis Middle School.

But though an election year is a great time to ask question of our elected officials and those running for office, keep in mind there is plenty opportunity throughout the year to speak up and let your concerns be known.

Just this past week, a town ordinance was halted in its second reading by just a few voices, but those few sparked a discussion about what issues would arise days, months or even years later should the ordinance pass with no question.

During the discussion, the point was raised that, regardless of how the ordinances are written, there will always be someone who has an issue with it. While the age old saying “You can’t please everyone” certainly rings true in this case, it should also serve as a reminder that if you aren’t pleased with the way our town and county agencies are being run your voice can be the one to change that.

At the Thermopolis Independent Record we allow for, and welcome, letters with concerns about town and county issues and are happy to print them as long as they fall within our policy. But we also field plenty of requests to do in depth investigations based on a person feeling frustrated or slighted by a particular business, organization or individual(s). While these concerns are valid and taken with seriousness, those feeling wronged can also bring them to the respective board, whether it be the county commission, town council, hospital board, school board, chamber of commerce or any of several other board. Their meetings are regularly open to the public, and that openness provides opportunity to be that voice that can start the conversation and bring about some change.

So, rather than wait for an election year to come around before bringing concerns to our elected officials, take the time to attend meetings and get informed about what’s happening. If you have a question or concern, get your name on the agenda prior to the meeting to help ensure there’s time for you to speak. It really is amazing what we as citizens can do when we speak up.
